Senate Democrats just announced a vote to change the filibuster before Martin Luther King Jr. Day in order to pass a critical voting rights bill. That’s big news.
We need Senate Democrats to finally bypass the filibuster so we can protect voting rights, free and fair elections, and our democracy. But it’s clear that we also need an end to the filibuster so we can pass popular legislation on protecting abortion rights, LGBTQ+ equality, policing reform, raising the minimum wage, gun safety, climate action, health care, and so much more.
After voters delivered us the House, Senate, and White House, Democrats have a rare opportunity to deliver for the people in a big way. We can’t afford to squander it. I’ve long been advocating for an end to the filibuster — and there’s too much on the line for our agenda to simply be stalled in the Senate.
It’s simple: we either protect the filibuster or our democracy. We must respond to the more than 400 Republican attacks on voting rights and our elections by getting rid of the filibuster. That’s how we take power away from Mitch McConnell, protect voting rights, and preserve our democracy. But ending the filibuster is also how we respond to Republican attacks on LGBTQ+ folks, abortion rights, and the environment. This is why getting rid of the filibuster is so important and so urgent.
It’s time to nix the filibuster and deliver for the people.
We can only make this change together, and we need to be all-in on this fight.
In solidarity,
Pramila
