Here’s your updates for this week.

Hey Indivisibles,

We hope that you had a safe and relaxing holiday break because it is time to get back to work fighting for democracy reform and reconciliation.

First of all, let’s talk about democracy. This morning, Senator Schumer sent out another dear colleague letter where he reiterated that even though he would like Republicans to work with the Democrats on the issue of democracy reform, he is fully prepared to fight it out in the Senate to protect the foundation of our democracy: free and fair elections.

In other democracy reform news, it sounds like Senator Manchin is genuinely engaging in talks about the filibuster and democracy reform. If you can remember, Sen. Manchin made some comments before the holiday break acknowledging just how important voting rights are. He also acknowledged that the Senate rules have changed in the past, and said that he is open to rules that make the Senate work better.

Next, let’s talk about reconciliation. Before the Senate went home, Manchin gave everyone quite the scare saying he was a “no” on Build Back Better (BBB). Senator Manchin is known for this sort of posturing, and this isn’t our first time dealing with pushback from him during bill negotiation processes. We aren't so much focused on Senator Manchin’s words, as we are on making sure this critical legislation passes. Because of all the great work building urgency and a mandate to pass BBB, President Biden and Leader Schumer both felt they needed to put out statements immediately after Manchin’s comments, reassuring voters that Democrats will bring both voting rights and reconciliation to the floor sometime this month.

With that, here are your weekly to-dos:

Your Weekly To-Dos

  1. Call your Senator and demand they fix the filibuster and move quickly to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. Senate Democrats have released a new version of their democracy reform bill called the Freedom to Vote Act. Senator Schumer along with other Democratic Senators have agreed to move forward with democracy reform, even without Republican support for the bill. Call your Senators and let them know you stand with Sen. Schumer, and you want them to adjust the filibuster now to pass the Freedom to Vote Act as soon as possible.
  2. Call your senator and demand they pass BBB before they head on another recess! It is time for the Senate to do its job and pass BBB this month. Call your senator and let them know that you’re extremely angry that the Senate did not pass BBB before the end of 2021 and, The Senate should not go on recess again until they’ve delivered for the American people.
  3. If you live in a Blue state, call your senator before their Tuesday caucus meeting to support voting rights. Senate Democrats meet every Tuesday for a weekly caucus luncheon, where they discuss and set their legislative priorities. It’s imperative that they hear from us about the need for structural democracy reform legislation before they go into these important meetings. Call your Senators on Tuesday before lunch and let them know you want them to fix the filibuster and fix democracy.
  4. Attend a day of remembrance vigil on January 6 in your area. It has been almost a year since right-wing insurrectionists stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, in a futile attempt to overturn the election results of 2020. This January 6, exactly one year later, we are joining our partners to hold vigils nationwide.  Americans across race, place, party, and background will come together with candles to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections. We won’t let another Capitol Insurrection happen.

P.S. -- We’re able to fund the ads, call scripts, tools, and work of huge weeks like last week because of the generous support of grassroots donors, particularly recurring donors whose support we can count on every month. If you’re able, click here to make a recurring or one-time gift to help fund our work.
