It's our first issue of PFLAG Connects for 2022. We're looking forward to staying connected with you throughout the year, as we continue our shared mission of making sure every LGBTQ+ person knows they are loved and valued.

Three Steps to Being a Better Ally in the New Year

The start of a new year often means New Year’s Resolutions. Make a resolution to be a better ally in 2022 and use these resources to get you started:

  1. Learn: Check out the resources available at straightforequality.org/allyspectrum to help you find the next step on your ally journey.
  2. Watch: Revisit several episodes of PFLAG Academy Online to boost your allyship, including What Would You Do?, So You Think You Can Ally, and Be Kind, Rewind. Once you’ve gone through and brushed up on some general ally skills, be sure to check out sessions on how you can be a better ally to people with more expansive LGBTQ+ identities, to trans and nonbinary people, and to bisexual+ people.
  3. Share: Download one of our Straight for Equality ally cards, fill yours out, and take a photo to post on social media to let people know who you are and what you believe in.

Defend Democracy: We the People Jan 6 Day of Remembrance and Action

As PFLAGers, we know that when we band together with our partners across race and place we can create lasting change. Throughout 2021, we fought the actions of extremist politicians and militants who attacked the Capitol and have stormed our local school boards as they sought to strip away the rights of LGBTQ+ people, BIPOC people, women, immigrants, and more. Last year, we turned out in record numbers, made sure our votes were counted, and that the will of the people prevailed. To have a government of, by, and for the people, where all of our rights are respected and freedoms protected – including rights for LGBTQ+ people – we must continue the work to stop those who spread lies or incite violence as they try to claim or hold power.

So this January 6, exactly one year later, people across race, place, party, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In the U.S., the voters decide the outcome of elections. The promise of democracy is not a partisan issue but a calling that unites us.

Something to Talk About...Live!

January is Poverty in America Awareness Month

Despite numerous reports about the economic disparities people who are LGBTQ+ face, the myth of gay affluence is extremely pervasive. Join PFLAG National this Thursday, January 6th at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live! This will be our first live show of the new year, and we'll be discussing Chabeli Carrazana and Orion Rummler's article in The 19th, “The Census Bureau’s first ever data on LGBTQ+ people indicates deep disparities” with Mia Ives-Rublee, Director, Disability Justice Initiative at the Center for American Progress.

You can watch live on FacebookYouTubeLinkedIn, or Twitter.
