With winter upon us, manatees are now left with a tough decision: risk cold stress in waters below 68 degrees to find food or seek warmer, safer waters where their food source has vanished.
John — After the Trump Administration demoted the manatee from "endangered" to "threatened," the impacts for this species became dire.
15% of Florida’s manatee population died this year as 77,000 acres of seagrass, a staple in the manatee’s diet, have disappeared in one of the primary places the manatees spend their winter. Now, starvation has outpaced boat strikes as a major threat to this marine mammal’s survival.
With winter upon us, manatees are now left with a tough decision: risk cold stress in waters below 68 degrees to find food or seek warmer, safer waters where their food source has vanished.
That’s why the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is taking once-unthinkable steps to save the manatee by starting a trial feeding program in Cape Canaveral.
Desperate times call for desperate measures and ensuring that these manatees don’t starve this winter is vitally important. But we want to know what you think. Should manatees be restored to their previous “endangered” status under the Endangered Species Act?
Ordinarily, animals are only removed from the endangered species list if the circumstances that landed them there are resolved. But in this case, the manatees are facing as much danger from speeding boats and food scarcity as ever.
Pollutants and toxic algae blooms that have intensified with climate change are taking a massive toll on manatees, and this winter is expected to dwindle this species even further.
Do you support re-listing manatees as “endangered”?
