John, have you set a new year’s resolution yet? We have one to suggest: helping to end the cycle of plastic pollution.

Rep. Alan Lowenthal, one of SEEC’s Vice-Chairs, is working around the clock to ensure the passage of his bill, the ‘Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act,’ which he introduced in March.

Pro-environment advocates are calling it a “sweeping piece of legislation” that will significantly reduce the manufacturing of new plastic.

In the U.S., about 42 million metric tons of plastic are tossed out annually . While some of this is recycled and reused, environmentalists believe these solutions alone can’t reduce plastic pollution on their own. Rather than simply recycling, we must reduce the amount of new plastic produced in the first place.

The scientific evidence is conclusive. Plastic production is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions and pollution harming communities.

Rep. Lowenthal’s bill would make recycled plastic cheaper to buy than virgin plastic.

Businesses making more than $1 million annually from plastic products would be required to take part in an “extended producer responsibility” program, which would place fees on companies choosing to make their products from virgin plastic.

The Lowenthal bill also phases out the production of single-use plastic products like cutlery and grocery bags.

John, for your new year’s resolution this year, we ask you to join us in our mission to end plastic pollution by supporting SEEC members like Rep. Lowenthal. You can join in by doing two things:

1. Making a New Year’s resolution to cut back on plastic dependency, and
2. Contributing to our work to elect more SEEC members to Congress.
