Dear John,
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has been ratified by 37 states since it was proposed in Congress in 1972, just one state shy of the two-thirds majority needed for it to become law. Now that Democrats have won majorities in both houses of the Virginia Legislature, Virginia could become the 38th and final state needed to pass the ERA.

The next step to passing this amendment is for my opponent, Rep. Jerry Nadler, to hold a markup hearing to get bill HJR 38 to the House floor for a vote—before January. We need Congress to act immediately to extend the deadline needed to pass the ERA. Since Congress voted in 1978 to extend the ERA deadline from 1979 to '82, they certainly can again. The Virginia legislature must be reassured that Congress will act NOW to remove the original 1982 deadline and integrate the final three ratifications.
The ERA is so important because it would provide explicit protections, at the federal level, from discrimination based on sex. It is hard to believe these protections are still not guaranteed. This campaign has been built on ensuring women have equal rights and representation. The majority of our staff, donors, and volunteers are women. We believe it is past time for the ERA to be passed.

Yesterday was a historic election for Virginia in many ways. They’ve elected a record 41 female members to their legislature. Unfortunately, that’s still only 29% of the 140 seats, but historic nonetheless. We still have a lot of work to do for equal representation in America.

We have a chance to make history here in New York. Your support would mean the world to us.
All my best,
Lindsey
