Hi ACLU Supporter – As we speak, Congress is deciding how much of our taxpayer money will go to the Department of Homeland Security next fiscal year. And if we want to hold DHS accountable for abusing immigrants, then we need to speak up by the November 21 budget deadline. Send a message to Congress: Stop rewarding DHS with more money. It's time to defund hate. Even if you've already taken action, your members of Congress need to hear from you again as we ramp up the pressure before November 21.
Remember, ACLU Supporter, DHS is the department responsible for carrying out this administration's anti-immigrant agenda. Its sub-agencies ICE and CBP are separating families at the border, abusing immigrants (including children) in detention sites, turning away asylum seekers, and committing many more abuses – all fueled by the unprecedented size of its budget under the Trump administration. Last year, Trump tried and failed to get Congress to increase DHS's budget to build his border wall. That came out of months of work by activists like you. We won that fight in Congress – but Trump refused to play by the rules. He declared a national emergency to divert over $5 billion from other agencies instead. Now the budget fight is upon us again. We need to keep the pressure on Congress and show Trump we won't let up – no matter how many tricks he tries to pull to get his way. We've already shown we've got what it takes to keep up the fight. Now let's show the president that we, the people, will decide where our taxpayer money should go. And we won't fund the abuse of immigrants. Keep up the fight, Madhuri Grewal |
