One year ago today, I became the first Democrat since 1968 and the first woman ever to win in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.

It was a hard fought battle and in the end, we won by 6,784 votes.

It was a big night for our district and the country: our race helped Democrats take the majority and we ushered in new representation to our district. I look back fondly on that evening.

We’ve accomplished a lot in the past year. The House passed universal background checks (H.R. 8), the most consequential civil rights legislation since the Civil Rights Act (H.R. 5), the most comprehensive campaign finance reform bill (H.R. 1), and the list goes on, and on.

But our gains are at risk in 2020. Republican leadership has blocked all of our meaningful progress in the Senate, and national groups are already running ads against my campaign as you read this.

One year ago today, I felt honored to win our historic election, excited to serve my country in a new way, and optimistic about what the new House of Representatives could do.
