keeping you up to date on all things Northeast Wisconsin Year in Review: 2021 NEWsflash Friend, Welcome back to a special edition of The NEWsflash, a collection of great stories that happened in Northeast Wisconsin over the past year. Northeast Wisconsin experienced a lot in 2021, there were highs and lows, setbacks and triumphs, but throughout it all, the stories of resilience from different Wisconsinites were inspiring. Here is to a bright future starting with 2022. I've included some photos and highlights from a few of the events my team and I were able to attend in 2021. You can also find information on how my office can help you with any federal problem you may have. As always, please don't hesitate to contact my office if we can ever be of assistance. Semper Fi, January: This January the Resch Expo Center opened right across from Lambeau Field, revealing 125,000 square feet of brand new event space. I'm so excited for spaces like this to break ground in Northeast Wisconsin. February: When the MV Roger Blough caught fire this February, the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department rushed to the scene. Thanks to their efforts, no one was injured and there was minimal damage to the ship. It was an honor to visit with them and thank them for their service. One of the best parts of my job is being able to highlight amazing work like this. March: Earlier this year, rural communities faced unique challenges in accessing the COVID-19 vaccine. In March, I saw how Prevea's partnership with the Marinette County Public Health Department seamlessly navigated this issue to make the vaccine available to as many Wisconsinites as possible. April: This past April, I had the chance to visit the NEW Zoo to learn about their operation (and had a chance to make some new friends too). The NEW Zoo is a Northeast Wisconsin gem and a perfect way to spend an afternoon with friends and family. I can't wait to bring my family here to see one of the great attractions right here in our backyard. May: I got to participate in a farm field day Green Bay West Shore Shore Demonstration Farms. We discussed cover crops, healthy soil, and the future of farming practices in Northeast Wisconsin. It's great to have community leaders promoting and teaching these innovative techniques to others. June: In June, the Federal Highway Administration recognized the new National Scenic Byway in Door County. The 66-mile road takes you from Sturgeon Bay all the way to the tip of the peninsula with beautiful lake views along the way. Being designated as a National Scenic Byway will help protect the natural beauty of the drive, and the will increase tourism to Door County. July: After years of collaboration between federal, state, and local officials, as well as other community leaders, the Five Locks System on the Fox River in Kaukauna became a reality in July 2021. This project will allow us to continue to share the incredible views along the Fox River in our community with the rest of the state, and also give local officials better tools to protect the environment. I was proud to join Jeremy Cords and Ron Van De Hey from the Fox River Navigational System, the Wisconsin State Secretary of Administration Joel Brennan, State Rep. Jim Steineke, and Kaukauna Mayor Tony Penterman for the opening of the locks. August: On August 31, my team welcomed back local veterans from the Old Glory Honor Flight. This was the first honor flight for our community since the start of the pandemic, and gave 99 Korean and Vietnam War-era veterans the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to see the monuments dedicated to their service. Welcoming back veterans from honor flights is an incredible experience and something I hope everyone in our community gets a chance to participate in. September: The Luxemburg-Casco School District dedicated its new Ahnapee Diesel Center within the Casco Career Academy in September this year. Ahnapee Diesel is the first program in Wisconsin to focus solely on diesel while providing students with high school and college credits. This type of hands on work teaches students the real-life skills they need to thrive in Wisconsin's workforce. It's great to see this trailblazing program start right here in our community. October: At the beginning of October, my team and I hosted a roundtable at TitleTown Tech with Microsoft President Brad Smith that focused on ways we can strengthen Wisconsin's cyber workforce. It was a great conversation with local technology and education leaders who are doing important work to increase education opportunities and train the workforce of tomorrow. November: I also had the chance to speak at the United Patriotic Society Brown County Veterans Day celebration at the new Resch Expo Center in November. Being able to share stories and remember the sacrifices of veterans within our community is something that I always cherish. Thank you all for your service. December: Finally, to wrap up this year, my staff joined the celebration of the Village of Lena's 100th anniversary. The centennial celebration kicked off by filling a time capsule to be opened in 50 years, which included a recognition of the village's birthday that I entered in the Congressional Record. I can't wait to see the ways the village evolves and grows over the next 50 years. REMINDER: If you're experiencing issues with a federal agency, my office is here to help.
