Dear John,

A few weeks ago, I was with Greta Thunberg outside the Supreme Court. Her
presence was electrifying. Her calls for radical action on climate change were
deeply compelling. She's absolutely right that extreme circumstances require
extreme actions. And with President Trump announcing the US’s withdrawal from
the Paris Climate Agreement, I’m feeling more extreme than ever.

In that spirit, I want to ask you to participate in the most “extreme” event of
the year that we organize here at the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. It’s
also our most inspiring, noisy, fun, and darn right effective event of the year. It is, of course, our 15th annual “Keep Winter Cold” Polar Bear Plunge.

Heed Greta Thunberg’s call for radical action by jumping into the icy cold
Potomac River with us this January. Join our 15th annual “Keep Winter Cold”

As Greta said during her September visit: We are out of time. The
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says we may have 10 years to cut
climate emissions in half to avert catastrophic climate disruption. CCAN is
uniquely positioned to drive needed emissions cuts in the states of Maryland,
Virginia, and DC. We also act as the nation’s “climate first responders.” Our
grassroots base lives in and around the nation’s capital, allowing us to muster
crowds, passionate voices, and heat at strategic moments on Capitol Hill and at
the White House. Join us for the 15th annual “Keep Winter Cold” polar bear
plunge January 25th. You’ll have a ball — I promise — and you’ll help us raise
funds right next door to Congress on the Potomac River. Greta would be proud of
you. Help us meet our goal of 250 plungers As always, we’re holding this event
along a little beach at National Harbor, on the Potomac, just downstream of
Congress. More than ever, our national leaders need to hear the message: Save
the polar bears. Save the humans. Keep winter cold. We just need your help.
Commit right now, as the holidays approach, to doing a good deed in the New
Year. What does it involve? Nothing more than a fun trip to the beach on January
25th, a Saturday. And, yes, that split-second walk into the water. We provide
the coffee, donuts, changing tents, and a big party afterwards. You just provide
an hour or so of your time sending emails to your loved ones before the event
and asking them to sponsor you. It's just like an AIDS walk or a breast cancer
run. You do something, well, interesting, and your closest and dearest donate a
few dollars to CCAN in your name. Join us for the 15th annual “Keep Winter Cold”
polar bear plunge January 25th. You’ll have a ball — I promise — and you’ll help
us raise funds right next door to Congress on the Potomac River. Greta would be
proud of you. Help us meet our goal of 250 plungers Find out more details here
and below. It’s easy to raise money and even easier to dip all or part of your
body into the water. This year our goal is to gather 250 people on the beach at
National Harbor while each participant pledges to raise at least $350 in
sponsorships from loved ones. Why 350? Because that's the number scientists say
is safe for carbon pollution in our atmosphere - 350 parts per million CO2.
Check out this video to learn more about this number, 350. And check out this
video to see how much fun you'll have on January 22nd . Best, Mike Tidwell
