John, this time of the year is always a helpful reminder of why I’m running for Congress in the first place.

I didn’t start this campaign because I want a career in politics. I don’t care about the publicity or having my name and face on a banner.

I’m doing this because our communities in Illinois’ Eighth desperately need a representative in office who will actually fight for them, not corporations or special interests.

So when my community approached me to run earlier this year, I thought hard about it.

I thought about the time I would have to spend on the campaign trail away from my wife and kids. The dinners I would miss, the family memories that I would only experience through a call or text. As much as I try to be there, it’s just not the same.

I also thought about the future I’m leaving to my kids, their kids, and every generation after. A healthcare system so fundamentally broken a family could go bankrupt from one emergency. An education system so expensive a four-year college degree is a commitment to lifelong debt. Earth ravaged with climate catastrophes leaving our communities unrecognizable and our planet unlivable.

I asked myself, “Will I sleep well at night knowing that’s the future we’re leaving to our children?”

Luckily, when I introduced them to this idea, they couldn’t have been more supportive. Like so many of us across the country, they see the problems our country is facing. They also see the inaction of our leaders in power to do anything real about them.

Action was the only real option, so we launched into this journey together. From long nights of fundraising calls and events, to community outreach and organizing, they’ve been right by my side doing everything to support the campaign. I couldn’t (and wouldn’t want to) do this without them.

Now, as we head into election year, we are going to need all hands on deck.

John, will you join me and my family in the fight for a better world?
