Ellis Island opens and offers millions the American dream
A New Year, A New Life
New Year’s Day is often celebrated as a new beginning, a fresh start.

That was never more true than for the immigrant passengers filling three large ships in the Hudson River on January 1, 1892.
That was the opening day of Ellis Island, the new federal immigrant processing station that would become a national symbol of hope and opportunity.

After their long voyage, some 700 passengers completed the medical and legal inspections and entered America that day in 1892. The first was 17-year-old Annie Moore from Ireland ([link removed]) and her two younger brothers, Anthony and Phillip. Nearly 450,000 people became citizens at Ellis Island that first week.

Over the years, immigration shifted from Northern and Western Europe to Southern and Western Europe, and even non-European, as various peoples fled war, political and religious oppression, drought, and famine – all seeking a new beginning in the New World. Some of the most famous ([link removed]) include Bob Hope ([link removed]) , Irving Berlin, Cary Grant, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
Overall, there were 12 million immigrants who became American citizens at Ellis island and wove their threads into the American tapestry before the facility closed in 1954.
The station at Ellis Island now serves as a museum commemorating the journey of millions and an enduring symbol of America as the world’s proverbial melting pot.

America began as a land of immigrants and was built by immigrants. It is estimated that nearly 40 percent of Americans can trace at least one of their ancestors back to Ellis Island. And our country continues to offer hope and opportunity to immigrants who come legally to build a good life for themselves.

Representing the Founders' Vision
Nearby Lady Liberty was an important symbol for those who entered America through Ellis Island then and continues today—a symbol of the founders' vision for a free society in which all its people are entitled to their life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

At the Jack Miller Center, we are guided by that vision and America's fervent, albeit imperfect, quest to achieve it.
We hope that you will join us in our mission and help us bring America's story and founding ideals to more young people across the nation.

From all of us at JMC, we wish you a happy and prosperous New Year!
