, it’s been another challenging year, but despite the continued threat of a pandemic, global efforts to fight one of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases has continued.

The community health workers who are out there supporting people on the front line every day have shown their resilience, the scientists who are developing the next generation of tools for the fight have continued to innovate and our malaria champions have continued to agitate for more resources from our world leaders.

Thank you for being part of the 2021 journey to end malaria. This year the community has demonstrated its strength and unity against a disease we know how to beat.

** The World’s First Malaria Vaccine
------------------------------------------------------------

In a historic moment, the WHO approved the use of the world’s first malaria vaccine - a critical step in building armoury against this deadly disease. The RTS,S vaccine took 20 years of development, in which the British company GlaxoSmithKline played an important role.

The Jenner Institute at Oxford University is also producing a new malaria vaccine. In its stage 2 clinical trials, it proved to be 77% effective. Vaccines, while not a silver bullet, will be vital tools in our toolkit to end one of the world’s oldest diseases.

** The World Drew The Line Against Malaria
------------------------------------------------------------

In February Zero Malaria launched its new campaign calling on people from across Africa and the globe to Draw The Line Against Malaria, to show world leaders that we’re the generation to end it. To date the campaign has made 1.4 billion impressions and had more than 24m digital engagements and won multiple prizes.

** Brits agree science is the UK’s greatest strength
------------------------------------------------------------

In September, a new poll told us that the vast majority of Brits agree that science and medicine is the UK’s biggest strength and its most valuable export. A new report, also let us know that British-led science is helping transform the malaria fight – producing exciting innovative tools.

** Thank you to our partners and fundraisers
------------------------------------------------------------

This year, we marked two very special milestones with partners.

Rentokil Initial celebrated ten years of partnership through a virtual ‘Race to Kigali’ challenge which involved colleagues from across the globe. Fever-Tree reached their milestone to donate an incredible £1 million over three years to fight malaria. Every partner and donor who has supported us this year is important to us and vital to ending malaria. Thank you!
