Hi Revealer,
Communities around the world time and again have demanded accountability from government agencies and corporations that put profit over people. And our fearless reporters – acting in the public’s interest – have been there every step of the way, using the tools of journalism to keep up the pressure.
This work is time and resource intensive. Our team spends months – sometimes years – rigorously reporting our stories, developing sources, conducting interviews and analyzing data to bring you nuanced, important investigations week after week.
Over the summer, reporters Laura C. Morel and Aura Bogado exposed how a number of the government’s shelters for unaccompanied migrant children ([link removed]) have been turning to police to manage the sort of behavior that could be expected of children, especially isolated refugee children. Laura and Aura obtained body camera footage of a sheriff’s deputy tasing a 16-year-old migrant boy in a shelter in Texas. When we contacted the department for comment, it told us that the video was accidentally released and that it had launched an internal affairs investigation because of our query. Then it asked that we destroy the footage. We refused – agreeing with the boy’s grandmother that the public had to see conditions inside the shelter.
The story ([link removed]) was picked up ([link removed]) globally. As a result of the reporting, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro demanded that the Office of Refugee Resettlement and the inspector general for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services investigate what he called “clearly an example of over-policing with respect to asylum-seeking youth.”
With new data, tips and an expansive legal battle with the government, our team continues to dig into vital, uncovered stories about how the United States treats migrant children. But we need your support to continue fighting secrecy and abuse. And we’re running out of time.
To make sure your tax-deductible donation counts for 2021, please donate by Dec. 31. ([link removed]) Plus, if you start a new recurring donation of at least $9, we’ll send you a Reveal keychain.
