Subject: The need for The Progressive has never been greater!
December 21, 2021
Dear fellow progressive,
A lot has happened since this time last year. Last year at this time an election had been held, but the votes were not yet certified. At the same time, a pandemic was raging, but a vaccine had not yet been approved. At the United Nations annual climate summit, COP25, in December 2019 (no summit was held in 2020 due to COVID-19), U.N. Secretary General António Guterres would announce that he was disappointed with the outcome of the meetings, saying that leaders had missed an opportunity to be more ambitious on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and financing for poorer countries.
Since then, an angry mob has stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn an election; Donald Trump was impeached a second time by the U.S. House of Representatives; irate parents, fueled by rightwing funders, are disrupting school board meetings and threatening teachers and public officials over masking rules, vaccination requirements, and the teaching of historical reality.
Through it all, The Progressive has been here—bringing you accurate, fact-based, and trustworthy news and information about the issues of our time. We have been here through thick and thin, through good times and bad, giving voice to progressive movements across the country. And we will continue to be here, thanks to your financial support ([link removed]) .
In 2021, we covered the incoming Biden Administration and the progressive forces pressuring for real change; we reported on the continued rise of the far-right and their infiltration into law enforcement, the military, and the nation’s courts; we wrote about workers standing up for their rights, and sometimes walking off the job.
We published extensive interviews with leading progressive voices, including Amy Goodman, Laura Flanders, Zephyr Teachout, Nina Turner, Nancy MacLean, and Jamie Raskin. We looked at the housing crisis, the climate crisis, and the crises facing our public schools. All this along with insights from our regular columnists Dave Zirin, Negin Farsad, Jim Hightower, and Mike Ervin.
It is not easy producing a bimonthly magazine, a weekly newsletter, a daily website, and two important projects: one distributing op-eds and one looking at the issues affecting our public schools. We do it because all of us here have a commitment to providing the best quality news and analysis, showcasing the work of thoughtful writers and activists, and giving you the kind of information that helps make sense of our fast-moving world.
For more than 112 years, The Progressive has been covering war and peace, grassroots movements for democracy and justice, struggles to maintain and build a sustainable environment, and efforts in opposition to militarism and nuclear peril. The Progressive has always been, and will continue to be, free from corporate influence, a staunch advocate for free speech and independent journalism, and for the effort to build a more just society.
But we can only do it with your help. Please take a moment to show your support for our publication, these efforts, and this view of the possibility of a better world.
