Just as 2021 has been a confounding and challenging year for the world, so it has been for our work at The Sentry. But after an exhaustive effort by our entire staff, we are beginning to see the payoff in the last few weeks. We have been advocating hard for a more robust anti-corruption and human rights strategy by the United States and other governments around the world, and that is exactly what we saw during the run up to the Summit for Democracy.

Most importantly, the Biden administration released a new, whole-of-government strategy to counter corruption and illicit finance. In addition, the Department of the Treasury announced new steps to prevent corrupt actors from abusing the US real estate market to hide their ill-gotten wealth. To increase corporate transparency, the government also began implementing landmark legislation that effectively bans anonymous shell companies in the US. Each of these initiatives addresses key issues that The Sentry has frequently highlighted over the past few years.

The Treasury Department also announced new and updated network sanctions against Dan Gertler, Benjamin Bol Mel, and Al-Cardinal-all key enablers of corruption and human rights abuses who have been the repeated focus of The Sentry's investigations and advocacy.
