In Texas, a six-week abortion ban — known as S.B. 8 — means patients can't access abortion in the state after about six weeks. Patients don't know when — or if — their access to abortion will ever be restored in Texas.
We've already seen the devastating impact S.B. 8 has had on patients in Texas. The burden falls especially hard on Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities and folks with low incomes for whom generations of systemic racism and discrimination have put health equity out of reach.
The Supreme Court essentially gave other states the green light to mimic Texas's S.B. 8 law when the court failed to block it earlier this month. In fact, Florida and Ohio have already introduced copycat bills.
As state lawmakers across the country plan to introduce new abortion bans in state legislative sessions next year, will you be there to help protect patients and providers?
By allowing S.B. 8 to remain in effect, the Supreme Court has called the fundamental right to abortion into question. And our constitutional right is likely to be further unraveled or eliminated entirely next year:
That's when the court is expected to rule in the case involving a Mississippi abortion ban case — a decision that could cut nearly half the country off from abortion and reverse rights that have been protected for nearly 50 years.
We can't afford to wait and see what happens — the work to defend patients has to happen now. That means striving to protect abortion in every state. It means holding lawmakers accountable for every attack on abortion access. It means working to pass the Women's Health Protection Act in the Senate. It means working with organizers on the ground to mobilize communities across the country and advocate to protect and expand our reproductive health and rights.
It means showing up, no matter what.

We're focused on abortion access, because the crisis is so urgent. But patients are counting on Planned Parenthood health centers every day for birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, and so much more. Millions of people rely on Planned Parenthood for sex education that they maybe couldn't find anywhere else.
Making sure everyone — young people, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, people with low incomes — has access to that exceptional care depends on your support.
Please, show us that you're still with us.
Make your last-minute gift to defend sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Thank you for your support, and happy New Year.
Sincerely,
Alexis McGill Johnson, President
