The Joint Economic Committee in Congress just released a report calculating the state-by-state toll of the gun violence epidemic in America, and the results are staggering. Of course, we knew things were bad – that’s why we’re working every day to end this crisis – but these numbers are even more drastic than we imagined.

Nationally, the report put the economic cost of gun violence at $229 billion a year. But the human cost – the families that have been torn apart, the young people who will never see their high school graduation, the children who are growing up traumatized – those numbers are immeasurable.

We can only hope these alarming statistics will inspire action in the federal government and local governments across the country. But we’ve been in this fight long enough to know that hope is not enough: We must demand action – or create it ourselves.

Across our nation, the statistics are terrifying:

* Young people in the United States are 50 times more likely to die by gun violence than their counterparts in other economically developed nations.

* 2017 saw almost 40,000 lives lost to gun violence, including 2,500 schoolchildren. It was the highest total in 40 years.

* The racial divide persists, making a young black male 20 times more likely to be murdered by gun violence than a white peer.
