Dear Friend,

One of the huge wins we had together in 2021 was reducing child poverty by
40% through an expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC), as well as having the
first (temporary) national paid family/medical leave program, and also
improving child care access by helping to pass the American Rescue Plan.
At MomsRising, we know it is critical to moms and families – as well as to
businesses and our economy – that we make sure that these advances,
including the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) checks, continue in 2022.

Especially as this pandemic continues, as families continue to struggle,
and as businesses work to keep their doors open and jobs filled; the
monthly CTC checks, the paid family/medical leave, the increased childcare
access, and the other components of the American Rescue Plan that build a
care infrastructure MUST continue. Here are some stories West Virginia
moms have shared with us about the positive impact of these temporary
policies that we’re fighting hard together to extend through the Build
Back Better Act, which has passed the House and now needs to pass the
Senate:

“The expanded Child Tax Credit has helped my family in the following
ways: 1. It allows us to buy extra food. 2. I have been able to get my
children extra home school supplies. 3. I have been able to put money
away for Christmas, birthdays, holidays, etc. 4. I have been able to get
my children the things they need for their extracurricular activities.
5. I was able to get my children their own (much needed) cell phones and
cell phone service so I can always keep in touch with them wherever they
are.”
- Christina in Shinnston, WV

“I am a single mother and get absolutely no financial help from my
children’s father. It’s been tough with Covid and working during this
whole time as essential has made it very hard for me to balance time
with my kids and time I have to work and because of the tax credit I was
able to work normal hours and still spend time with my children. Thank
you so much but if this becomes permanent it could really help me boost
my children’s wellness.”
- Fatima in Huntington, WV

“As a full-time teacher, I’ve always had a second job to cover all the
bills; child care for my own young children or putting food on the
table. With the CTC, I have felt less pressure to work night and day to
make ends meet. I can now relax and enjoy my time at home with my
family, and feel more present in the classroom with my students.”
- Jennifer in Morgantown, WV

“Thank You. This was, is, & will be a God-send to my daughter for her 3
children while she is full-time in school & working full-time & raising
her 3 children! A lump sum CTC once a year at tax-time doesn’t help like
a small continual amount each month! Again, Thank You. From a
Grandmother that is Proud of her Daughter!”
- Angela in Martinsburg, WV

You’ve shared stories just like this with leaders, the media, and with one
another – stories that demonstrate the positive impact of policy change,
from every corner of the country, and that let people know they aren’t
alone. You’ve also made calls, organized locally on-the-ground, reached
out to your elected leaders, signed onto letters to Congress, and so much
more. And it’s all adding up to move much-needed policy changes like
these. Good policy changes lives. It makes us more secure, and creates a
better future for our children, our businesses, our families, and our
economy. This is what we together fight for each day. For you. For Us.

We are hard at work getting Senator Joe Manchin back to the negotiating
table – and are keeping the momentum strong for the Build Back Better Act
to pass the Senate. We know that the policies in the Build Back Better
Act, including the expanded Child Tax Credit, paid family and medical
leave, childcare, free pre-k, home- and community-based services,
addressing equity in maternal health, healthcare, lowering prescription
drug prices, and immigration reform, are just what our families and our
economy need right now.

We'll never stop fighting to build a nation where every mom, child, and
family can thrive.

Thanks for being part of this movement.
