John,

Yesterday, the Green New Deal got its first test at the ballot box. We won big.

In Virginia, the State Democratic Party endorsed the Green New Deal, and candidates across the board campaigned on it and won historic gains, in part because young people turned out at 3-times the level they did in the last similar election. [1] [2]

They now control the House of Delegates, the State Senate, and the Governorship for the first time in over a quarter century. And many delegates pledged to make the Green New Deal a top priority next year.

In 2020, we need to do this across the country. Can you chip in to help us elect candidates in every corner of the country who will champion for the Green New Deal?

Virginia wasn’t the only place we saw the power of the Green New Deal to win elections:

In Philadelphia, Kendra Brooks ran on a progressive agenda including the Green New Deal and won a City Council seat Republicans held for over 70 years. Sunrise Philadelphia knocked on thousands of doors and got over 3,000 students to pledge to vote for Kendra. [3]

In Ames, 20 year old Iowa State University student, Rachel Junck, won the most votes in her city council election, and is on track to be the youngest elected official in Iowa history. She made climate change a core focus of her campaign. [4]

In a major upset, Democrat Andy Beshear won the governor's race in Kentucky, a state Trump won by 30 points. Republicans attacked Andy Beshear and Democrats by tying them to AOC and the Green New Deal, but their attacks and lies failed. Beshear ran on a just transition for coal workers toward a clean and renewable energy economy, and he won a historic victory. [5]

Last night showed that when candidates run grassroots campaigns that reject corporate money and make the case for the Green New Deal, they win — even despite ridiculous right-wing smear campaigns.

A year from now, we could be seeing wins like these all around the country, but to do that, we need to get organizing. We want to send field organizers to drive up the youth vote all over America -- but how big we can go depends on how much we can raise over the coming weeks.

Chip in today so we can go big and help elect Green New Deal champions all around the country next November.

Onwards,

Ahmed Gaya, National Field Director
