| | | | | NEWS HIGHLIGHTS November 2019 |  The situation with the chimpanzees in the New Mexico lab is heartless and unacceptable, so we wanted to make sure that you didn’t miss the opportunity to take effective action, offered in last Friday's e-mail alert. Over 40 chimpanzees have been languishing at the Alamogordo Primate Facility (APF) in New Mexico for years. On October 24, 2019, with the excuse that it’s for their own good, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that these chimps would NOT have their chance for freedom. These chimpanzees were used in horrific experiments, many funded by NIH, as well as other government agencies. Research using these chimps ended almost two decades ago, yet they still wait to be moved to a sanctuary home. The chimpanzees at APF are advancing in years and suffering the cumulative effects of a lifetime of confinement and harsh treatment. A positive sanctuary environment has the power to give these chimpanzees a superior quality of life in their remaining years. Please contact your legislators and urge them to demand that NIH move these chimpanzees out of the lab and to the Chimp Haven sanctuary. |
|  In October, undercover video footage was released, documenting severe abuse and neglect of monkeys, dogs, and cats at a testing facility in Germany. The video and photographs are stomach churning. Renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall watched the video and released a three-page statement about what she saw, calling it “some of the most callous, inhumane and brutal behavior by humans towards” animals. READ MORE » |  Scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia have developed a test method that could be used to study neurotoxins, without animal suffering. The researchers created synthetic peptides that mimic nerve receptors and attract neurotoxins. The hope is that the method can be used to develop anti-venom treatments, as well as help contribute to drug design and development for other unrelated ailments, including colitis and nicotine addiction. READ MORE » |  The National Association of Biology Teachers' (NABT) revised policy statement on dissection calls the use of alternatives in the classroom a “disservice to many students.” Animalearn has worked with hundreds of educators and knows first-hand that biology teachers (and students) are very interested in using dissection alternatives in their classrooms. This month, Animalearn will attend NABT’s annual conference and hopes to initiate an open discussion on animal dissection and the value of alternatives and humane science education. | | SANCTUARY MOMENT: Chimp Haven |  Mom and daughter share a cuddle This is Passion with her baby Carlee, who was born at Chimp Haven in 2017. Beyond the obvious cuteness, what makes this sight so special is that Carlee gets to grow up with her mom by her side, something in stark contrast to Passion’s childhood. Passion was taken from her mom, most likely soon after birth, raised by humans, and then used in experiments. Despite this, Passion is a doting mom for Carlee and her big sister Arden. Chimp Haven is the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary and cares for nearly 300 chimpanzees, all of whom have been retired from biomedical research.
