CBS Chicago Deathbed Confession: Wanted Bank Robber Reveals True Identity 50 Years Later Just before Thomas Randele died, his wife of nearly 40 years asked his golfing buddies and his co-workers from the dealerships where he sold cars to come by their home. They gathered to say goodbye to a guy they called one of the nicest people they’d ever known — a devoted family man who gushed about his daughter, a golfer who never bent the rules, a friend to so many that a line stretched outside the funeral home a week later. By the time of their final visit last May at Randele’s house in suburban Boston, the cancer in his lungs had taken away his voice. So they all left without knowing that their friend they’d spent countless hours swapping stories with never told them his biggest secret of all. For the past 50 years, he was a fugitive wanted in one of the largest bank robberies in Cleveland’s history, living in Boston under a new name he created six months after the heist in the summer of 1969. Not even his wife or daughter knew until he told them in what authorities described as a deathbed confession. How he was able to leave behind one family and create a new life — while evading a father and son from the U.S. Marshals Service who never gave up their hunt — is just now being pieced together. FOX 11 Ghislaine Maxwell Convicted In Epstein Sex Abuse Case The British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted Wednesday of luring teenage girls to be sexually abused by the American millionaire Jeffrey Epstein. The verdict capped a monthlong trial featuring sordid accounts of the sexual exploitation of girls as young as 14, told by four women who described being abused as teens in the 1990s and early 2000s at Epstein’s palatial homes in Florida, New York and New Mexico. Jurors deliberated for five full days before finding Maxwell guilty of five of six counts. She faces the likelihood of years in prison — an outcome long sought by women who spent years fighting in civil courts to hold Maxwell accountable for her role in recruiting and grooming Epstein’s teenage victims and sometimes joining in the sexual abuse. The defense had insisted Maxwell was a victim of a vindictive prosecution devised to deliver justice to women deprived of their main villain when Epstein killed himself while awaiting trial in 2019. During the trial, prosecutors called 24 witnesses to give jurors a picture of life inside Epstein’s homes — a subject of public fascination and speculation ever since his 2006 arrest in Florida in a child sex case. CBS 2 Public Safety News Coronavirus: L.A. County Reported 16,510 New Cases And 182 More Hospitalizations, Dec. 29 Los Angeles County public health officials reported a staggering 16,510 new cases of the coronavirus since Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 1,649,376, as of Wednesday, Dec. 29. The total number of cases represents 16.4% of Los Angeles County’s population. Officials reported 25 more deaths linked to the coronavirus since Tuesday, for a total of 27,601 deaths since tracking began. The total number of deaths represents 0.27% of Los Angeles County’s population. There were 182 new hospitalizations reported since Tuesday, bringing the total count of people hospitalized with coronavirus to 1,251. According to the California Department of Public Health’s vaccines dashboard, 70% of Los Angeles County is fully vaccinated and more than 16,855,427 vaccine doses have been administered as of Dec. 28. Los Angeles Daily News L.A. County Reports 91% Increase In COVID Cases Over Past Week Los Angeles County reported more than 16,000 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, in one of the highest daily case counts of the pandemic. Reported cases have increased by 91% over the past week, jumping from 8,633 to 16,510 on Wednesday, according to the county’s Department of Public Health. Additionally, test positivity rates have more than doubled from 8.7% to 17.6%, and daily hospitalizations have jumped over 30%, from 770 to 1,069, the department said. As transmission of the delta and omicron variants surge, public health officials are urging residents to scale down New Year’s plans by limiting gatherings to a very small number of people, where everyone is fully vaccinated and boosted if eligible. Large, crowded events are just too risky this holiday, the department said. “As we get ready to welcome the new year, this includes re-thinking party plans, limiting time indoors with non-household members, and isolating from others if feeling sick,” Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. KTLA 5 Los Angeles County's COVID-19 Hospitalizations Top 1,000 As Cases Surge For the first time since late September, the number of people in Los Angeles County hospitals with COVID-19 surpassed the 1,000 mark Tuesday, echoing a sharp upward trend in infections and a dramatic increase in the rate of people testing positive for the virus. According to state figures, there were 1,069 COVID-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals as of Tuesday, up from 966 on Monday. Of those patients, 207 were being treated in intensive care, up from 200 a day earlier. The increase is being closely watched by public health officials concerned that hospitals -- which expanded capacity to handle COVID patient numbers that topped 8,000 last January -- are less equipped to cope with such an intense surge this winter due to various factors, most notably a drop in staffing. The L.A. County increase in COVID hospitalizations has been rapid, jumping by 30% over the past week. One month ago, on Nov. 27, the state reported just 568 virus patients in the county. Also rapidly rising is the rate of people testing positive for the virus. NBC 4 Warnings Issued For LA County Burn Areas; State Resources In Position Los Angeles County Public Works issued its own winter storm warning Wednesday to people in burn areas, with the potential for heavy rain looming in Southern California. The fire damaged or destroyed 194 structures Officials are also concerned about the area of Lake Fire of August 2020, which burned 31,089 acres in the Lake Hughes area and damaged or destroyed 45 structures. People in the affected areas were urged to prepare in advance by placing sand bags around properties and keeping trash cans off streets.
