END-OF-YEAR MESSAGE FROM NUMBERSUSA FOUNDER ROY BECK
Dear John,
This past year has been filled with previously UNTHINKABLE immigration developments. I want to devote my annual year-end report to how that has happened, what can be done to prevent it in the future, and NumbersUSA's role (which is also YOUR role) in the solution.
Not far back into the past, the virtual abolition of ICE, the nation's interior immigration enforcement agency, would have been dismissed as unthinkably impractical and radical. But it happened in 2021!
It also would have been unthinkable for Congress to pass a giant amnesty with nary a word about enforcement to slow down future illegal immigration. But that is what the House of Representatives did in 2021!
If those things were unthinkable in the near-past, how could they have happened this year? What changed?
MOST OPINION ELITES ABANDONED ALL RESPONSIBILITY
I believe the nation's opinion elites in the media are chiefly to blame for the change.
In the first 20 years after I founded NumbersUSA in 1996, many opinion elites spoke against wildly impractical immigration changes. Because of their caution, truly radical open-borders proposals were treated by most politicians as indeed unthinkable, or never publicly offered at all.
In 2021, however, it seems that no immigration proposal, no matter how extreme, has been capable of drawing concern or even much attention from the opinion elites. Our job is to wake these elites out of their slumbering indifference to previously unthinkable, inconceivable, unimaginable governmental policies. Politicians do pay attention to these commentators, and we are having some recent success with some of them. Obviously, we must have more success.
This next year is going to require perhaps more effort than we've ever exerted before (despite recent good news from the Senate parliamentarian about the immediate amnesty threat to the nation in the Build Back Better reconciliation bill).
2022 is the year we need to stop retreating and begin advancing!
Please help us continue the fight!

THE UNTHINKABLE ABOLITION OF ICE
We had a glimmer of hope as recently as 2020 when many opinion and political elites DID balk at the sloganeering to dismantle ICE. Then-candidate Joe Biden rejected the "abolish ICE" movement, and the media praised him for his moderation.
But President Joe Biden this year allowed his Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to virtually eliminate ICE's critical functions piece by piece. Most voices in the media who spoke against abolishing ICE last year have expressed NO concern at all this year about the following previously unthinkable developments:
Immigration agents are now forbidden to deport almost all illegal aliens who aren't terrorists and haven't killed anybody.
Workplace raids have ended, so unscrupulous employers have no fear of their illegal-alien employees not being available for work.
The Senate has just confirmed a sheriff to oversee the federal program that deports criminals as they are released from local jails, even though the sheriff has championed sanctuary city policies that block the very same federal program he will now oversee!
In other words, the more than 40 million foreign citizens who traditionally travel to the United States each year on temporary visas for vacation, work, and education can now overstay their visas at will. Nobody really has to go home ever.
THE UNTHINKABLE LIFETIME 'MAGIC KINGDOM PASSPORT'
As a result of this dismantling of enforcement, America's most vulnerable workers must now compete for jobs and wages with every eager foreign worker around the world who can manage to get into this country legally or illegally.
Because of this, I say that President Biden has turned every U.S. visa into a "Magic Kingdom Passport."
Why do I use a term connected to the Disney fantasy parks? Because anybody around the globe who can afford to travel to Disney World (or to any other vacation, educational, or temporary work location in this country) is now free to overstay their visas, remain in the United States for the rest of their lives, and illegally take a job while they are at it. No limits!
Now that IS a magic kingdom at least, for the hundreds of millions of people in the rest of the world who would like to move here.
But it is NOT a country. And it certainly is not a republic in which the national community has control of its own destiny.
Yet this previously unthinkable threat to the livelihoods of so many American workers has been met with a whispered ho-hum from most of the opinion elites.
Since I started NumbersUSA 25 years ago this month, we and the millions in our grassroots networks have faced (and beaten back) many exceptional open-borders-like threats to our national community . . .
. . . but never like the threat we've battled throughout 2021 and face in 2022.
Thankfully, NumbersUSA members have stepped up their activism and their donations in a way that acknowledges the imminent danger. THANK YOU!
Our mobilization efforts increased fax and email messages to public officials by 130% over the previous year! In 2021, our members have sent more than THREE MILLION messages through our system to Congress, the President and governors.
Fortunately, Republican Members of Congress appear to be holding together firmly against the Democrats' amnesty and immigration-increase proposal. There are a myriad of reasons for their unified opposition, but it does represent the successful culmination of our Hill Team's work over the years. They have educated Republican Members of Congress about their constituents' insistence on border enforcement and lower immigration numbers, while the politicians were bombarded by NumbersUSA members' requests and complaints.
THE UNTHINKABLE AMNESTY WITHOUT ENFORCEMENT
For 25 years, our activists have witnessed the less-than-perfect-but-still-very-powerful results of our regular victories in blocking bad legislation. Each time our grassroots mobilization has helped stop massive green card increases and amnesties, the immigration expansionists a few years later have come back with even more-radical proposals.
Originally, we were battling amnesties that included reductions in chain migration and the visa lottery and provisions that at least sounded like they might reduce illegal immigration in the future. Unfortunately, the reductions in these proposals were always planned to kick in only after years of increases. And the enforcement provisions were insufficient and included loopholes that would tempt future Congresses to never fully implement them. But at least the amnesty champions felt they needed to pretend to want to greatly reduce future illegal immigration.
But the immigration expansionists have long ago ceased to treat illegal immigration as something to limit. And they have one-by-one eliminated any forms of enforcement . . .
. . . until this year when we had the Build Back Better amnesty that made no pretense at all that the government should discourage illegal immigration in any way.
The response of the opinion elites has largely been silence. In a year that shattered the record for most border deaths (despite also setting a record for the most border rescues), the U.S. House just before Thanksgiving passed what The Washington Post described as the "largest mass-legalization program for undocumented immigrants in U.S. history." Senate leaders are now demanding that their chamber pass this on to the President.
2022 is the year we need to stop retreating and begin advancing!
Please help us continue the fight!

WAKING UP ELITES TO THE REALITY OF UNTHINKABLE OPEN BORDERS
Twenty-five years ago, I regularly warned against labeling our opponents as "open-borders supporters." I said the term was too strident and not really accurate. No longer! No other term but "open borders" describes what we now have with the lifetime "Magic Kingdom Passport" provisions, the many reductions in border enforcement, and the ability of masses of foreign citizens to simply walk up to border checkpoints and claim asylum and be released into the country.
Mobilizing grassroots voters to stop the Senate from finally passing a gigantic amnesty and increasing annual green cards still further is a big job. But we also must educate, persuade, and bring to their senses enough of the opinion elites to help us force the nation's political forces to face the reality of what their immigration goals would do to our very existence as a self-determining people . . . and the reality of what damage has already been done by the gutting of immigration enforcement.
The truly terrifying development is that large swaths of the country's opinion and political elites have acted as if the proposals are somehow within the mainstream.
Fortunately, NumbersUSA has long had major operations to tackle this huge task. Besides NumbersUSA's unparalleled Capitol Hill operations and the nation's largest grassroots immigration-reduction army, we also have a many-tiered operation aimed specifically at improving the intellectual discourse about immigration among the opinion elites:
In the past year, we have engaged 309 journalists/pundits/authors about 694 articles they wrote. We have helped correct mistakes and brought to their attention key facts and issues that they otherwise seemed to be missing.
Our staff this year has communicated regularly in assisting more than 9,000 people who have volunteered to write letters to the editor of newspapers.
More than 15,000 people are signed up for our regular education and alerts to be online commenters on important articles in widely-read publications.
Our staff likewise assists more than 3,000 Twitter users, 16,000 Facebook users, and 2,500 bloggers to carefully guide and influence the conversations in the right direction.
Our staff on a nearly-weekly basis finds breakthroughs in new voices in the media discovering and being willing to stand publicly for taking another look at whether our U.S. immigration policies are in any way logical or practical.
NumbersUSA has just published Back of the Hiring Line, a book I've written about the historic role mass immigration has played in creating economic inequality, and particularly in depressing the wealth of the descendants of American slavery. It already is beginning to stir debate about which immigration positions truly hold the moral high ground.
Most business lobbies, environmental groups, social justice organizations, and religious leaders who proclaim themselves champions of racial equality and Black economic development unfortunately also champion high levels of mass immigration which the book shows has always been a profound instrument of systemic anti-Black racism. This certainly challenges the prevailing immigration narrative held by political and opinion elites.
Prodding another set of opinion elites, NumbersUSA has continued to be the nation's only researcher and publisher of studies on the connection between immigration policies and the loss of natural habitat and other open spaces, as well as the loss of local communities' ability to control their destiny when being overwhelmed by uninvited immigration-driven population growth. See our new website at arizonasprawl.com as an example.
Our educational efforts, of course, go far beyond the elites. This year, we've sent 95 MILLION individual email messages to keep our members informed. Among the public, there were more than 11 million views of our Tweets and 223 million views of our educational posts on Facebook.
All of that is a glimpse of the bold and robust activity that I have for a quarter of a century promised our donors.
Unlike most organizations raising money on the issues of the immigration disaster confronting our country, NumbersUSA is not just about sounding the warnings. NumbersUSA has always had action plans and the staff to back them, with offices right across the street from Congress, and daily interactions with politicians and their staffs attempting to further our agendas.
Please send a 2021 year-end gift. Let's create a different "unthinkable" for next year that a critical mass of opinion and political elites will start speaking up about the irrational policies and proposals that are today being treated as legitimate options for our national community.
