Dear Friend, “A disastrous outcome.” That’s what our ally and grantee the Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) called the results of the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland. Without a shred of irony, 118 private jets carried billionaires and politicians to November’s international meeting about limiting carbon emissions (of all things!). But when these corporate elites got there, they were thankfully met with resistance. Thousands of people protested inside and outside the summit, drawing attention to the destructive plans and false promises of the corporations and their political lackeys. The carbon trading “solutions” on offer allow for the further extraction and destruction of the planet under the guise of achieving “net zero” targets. Far from solving the climate catastrophe, these schemes just prop up planet-killing systems that need to be fundamentally transformed. Though you and I weren’t physically there, we were materially there in every march and sit-in in Glasgow — through support for Grassroots International. Donations from hundreds of supporters like you provided over $40,000 in financial support to the IEN, the Just Transition Alliance, La Via Campesina, and more so they could build the loudest and strongest climate actions possible. Beyond COP26, donations to Grassroots are helping these groups and others build lasting solutions to climate change in their communities. Every year gets us closer to what feels like the planet’s breaking point. But that doesn’t mean it’s hopeless. Strong movements are key to our future — whether that means stopping climate change, mitigating its worst effects, or transforming the systems responsible. That’s why, in the final days of 2021, I’m asking: could you give a donation to our New Visions, Continuing Resistance campaign? With our solidarity, grassroots movements of Indigenous Peoples, peasants, and frontline communities have pushed — and can keep pushing — for real solutions. |
