BREAKING: The EPA has just announced that it will roll back rules around how coal plants dispose of waste containing arsenic, lead, and mercury.
The Trump administration is proposing to allow coal companies to leave toxic waste sitting in storage ponds, where it can seep into our groundwater and nearby water bodies.
This is a serious risk — one coal ash spill in Tennessee in 2008 sent more than 1 billion gallons of waste pouring into a nearby town. Now, 200 workers involved in the clean-up are facing brain, lung, and skin cancer.
In fact, 91 percent of U.S. coal-fired power plants are already contaminating groundwater. And the 6 million people living near these coal-fired power plants are disproportionately people of color and lower-income people.
The danger here isn't hypothetical — the damage is happening now.
What happens next: We have 60 days to mount a response and tell the administration this change is unacceptable. That's a VERY small window — and we need your help. To pull off a major response, we're hoping to raise $100,000 by the end of the month — and a donor has agreed to triple match every gift.
Can we count on your support? Please — make an emergency contribution today and it will go three times as far to stop Trump's anti-environment agenda »
I want you to know: We have a shot at stopping this, but we need to resist in every way possible right now. That means pushing Congress to block Trump's efforts to gut environmental protections. It means challenging his attacks in the media. It means organizing on the ground.
Friend — an emergency donation right now helps on every front. It funds our pressure campaigns on Capitol Hill. It gets our teams on the ground in swing states that could decide these fights. It powers our grassroots organizing.
I know it can sometimes seem like there's a new attack from Trump every day — but I want you to know — resisting is working. We've blocked attempt after attempt to expand drilling. We've shown a spotlight on the corrupt deals within the administration, pushing some of Trump's worst deputies — like Ryan Zinke and Scott Pruitt — out of office.
We need your help to keep it up. The truth is, a sustained campaign like this takes resources we just don't have right now. We're turning to our members to help fight back.
If everyone reading this email pitched in — even just $5 — we'd blow through our fundraising goal in seconds. Please, donate today and your contribution will be triple matched.
We just can't pull this off without you, friend. Thanks for being a part of the resistance.
Sincerely,
— Adam, Brooke, Casey, ChiQuita, Elizabeth, Eric, Jim, Julie, Levi, Mike, Rachel, Sammi, and Vinnie
