So after becoming a commissioned officer in the U.S. Military, I learned to fly a helicopter and became one of the first handful of women to fly combat missions in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Then my Blackhawk was shot down over Iraq, costing me both legs and partial use of my right arm. I spent a long, painful year in Walter Reed Hospital undergoing surgeries and intensive physical therapy to relearn how to walk on my new prosthetic legs.

But I’m a fighter, so I turned these experiences into an opportunity to become a champion for Veterans. I ran for Congress and eventually won a seat in the U.S. Senate, where I’m still breaking barriers. In 2018, I became the first sitting Senator to give birth and bring a baby onto the Senate floor so I could care for my child and do my job at the same time.
