The conflict of interest is clear, John, and so is the science.
Senator Joe Manchin owns millions of dollars in coal stocks and earns half a million dollars each year in dividends alone.1
Yet, as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Senator Manchin is responsible for regulating the fossil fuel industry and has enormous power over hearings on key climate policy issues, developing bill proposals, and reporting legislative recommendations to the full Senate chamber.
At a time when global temperatures are continuing to rise and extreme weather events are getting worse every year, a coal baron cannot be in charge of the United States Senate climate policy. Period.
Will you join us in calling on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to replace Senator Manchin as Chair of the most important environmental committee in the U.S. Senate?

Knowing what we know about Senator Manchin’s investments, it comes as no surprise that Sen. Manchin announced that he plans to vote no on the Build Back Better Act when, or if, it comes up for a vote.
If Manchin sticks to his decision, he would be killing the largest climate investment by our government in history – shutting down over $555 billion in critical spending and making it nearly impossible for the U.S. to meet its emissions-cutting pledges under the Paris Agreement.
But no matter what happens with this bill – given Manchin’s deep ties to the coal industry and personal conflict of interests, he cannot continue to lead Senate Democrats’ climate policy and must be immediately replaced as Chair of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
If you agree, please sign now to demand that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer replace Joe Manchin as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

Together, we can ensure that Manchin faces the consequences for his betrayal of the American people, the President, and his colleagues in the House and Senate.
In solidarity,
