John,
With only 2 days left in the year, where do we stand?
Throughout this year we’ve raised the alarm on the unprecedented wave of attacks on our democracy. Our team identified 19 states whose legislatures enacted 34 laws that make it harder for Americans to vote. In especially egregious cases like new voter suppression laws in Texas, we sued. Yet an ongoing partisan election sabotage scheme threatens to further entrench these antidemocratic attacks all across the nation.
There’s no way to sugarcoat it: What we’re seeing is deeply disturbing. But there’s been a shift the last few weeks — more and more people recognize that our very democracy is at risk, and increasingly they are demanding action. As President Biden and some members of the Senate recently signaled that voting rights should become a top priority, we need to make sure defending democracy is at the top of the Senate’s list.
We’ve continued to champion two bills that would usher in national standards to protect voting rights: The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. It's urgent that these bills come to a vote, and soon. So far they have hit a wall of obstruction by the Republican minority in the Senate. There's nothing more important than bringing them to a vote.
In recent weeks, the Senate created a workaround to raise the debt ceiling by a majority vote. Senator Warnock took to the Senate floor and urged fellow senators to take a similar response and defend our democracy against the nationwide election sabotage scheme. How? Prioritize passing voting rights legislation — and don't let the Senate’s dysfunctional rules stand in the way. We need your support so we can make sure all of Congress understands: Our democracy can’t wait.
This work would not be possible without your support. With each partisan voter suppression bill passed in state legislatures, bad actors are emboldened and organized to weaken our democracy. Every time they post a win, they’re building a playbook to further undermine our freedom to vote. With your help, we can keep fighting back against these attacks.
We’re proud to stand with you in this fight. Thank you for your ongoing support of the Brennan Center as we continue the good fight — to save our democracy — in 2022.

Sincerely,
Michael Waldman,
Brennan Center for Justice
