Boeing executives came to my office after the 737 MAX crashes and said they were the result of pilot error. But our Senate investigation revealed the ugly truth: Boeing concealed key design flaws and put corporate profits ahead of public safety. Boeing’s pilots – and the passengers who lost their lives on board the 737 MAX – never stood a chance. They were in flying coffins.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s stunning lapse of oversight and Boeing’s lackadaisical approach led to deadly failures: A critical warning light in the cockpit was made a “premium add-on” instead of being standard issue. Crucial safety information was missing from pilot training manuals.
Where was the oversight that would have ensured proper safety regulations were put in place? In the hands of FAA regulators who failed at their jobs, with tragic consequences. With corporate greed left unchecked and government watchdogs falling down on the job, this system is clearly broken. That’s why I’m calling for immediate and sweeping reforms to keep airline passengers safe, and I need 5,000 concerned Americans to stand with me before midnight:
Make no mistake: These accidents were preventable. Boeing never should have had the opportunity to undercut what would have been lifesaving oversight of the 737 MAX. The company’s sabotage of rigorous safety scrutiny is chilling – and it demands us to act: We must reform this broken system to ensure safety certifications are truly independent.
