Dear Friend,
I support Immigration Equality’s work securing safe haven for LGBTQ asylum seekers because we all deserve to live and love fully, equally, and without apology. 

Even with the privilege I carry, shedding the shame of being my authentic self was painful, both mentally and physically. I avoided social situations. I had panic attacks for having to act, in life and on camera, like someone I was not. There were times where it felt difficult to exist.  

My own journey coming out as trans only illuminates for me just how deeply harrowing the lives of LGBTQ asylum seekers are. Many live in constant fear, hiding in the shadows to survive. Most have had to leave everything behind to seek asylum in the U.S.  

Fortunately, there is a light at the end of the tunnel: the tireless efforts of Immigration Equality to make this world more loving, compassionate, and free. They provided free legal representation to 800 LGBTQ asylum seekers this year and won 99% of their cases.

No matter how many times I read this fact, I am still floored: In over 80 countries, LGBTQ individuals face violence, prison time, or death, simply for existing.

I can’t even begin to imagine what that’s like, or the courage it takes to escape life-threatening conditions as a queer asylum seeker. To travel thousands of miles to the U.S., often through dangerous countries, only to be detained by ICE and treated like a criminal.

That’s why the work of Immigration Equality is so badly needed. Their attorneys fight for their clients' freedom from detention or deportation so they can live their best lives. Free to express their talent. Free to exhibit their ingenuity. Free to make the U.S. a profoundly better place.
