Dear Friends,
Despite the ongoing challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, 2021 has been a highly successful year for Sea Shepherd. With your support, we have achieved several notable victories for the ocean.
Earlier this year, Sierra Leone joined Sea Shepherd as our eighth government partner around the continent of Africa, enhancing efforts to combat the threat of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing worldwide. This successful model of partnering with governments has led to the arrest of 73 vessels to date and is now being adopted by other countries around the world.
Most recently, in Peru, we assisted specialized environmental prosecutors to arrest three trawlers for illegal fishing. In the Upper Gulf of California, Sea Shepherd continues to work with the government of Mexico, serving as the only line of defense for the critically endangered vaquita porpoise.
In Gabon, the Minister of Fisheries suspended the entire shrimp fishery in Gabonese waters after discovering the shocking bycatch ratio associated with this industry while on patrol with Sea Shepherd.
Finally, in Brazil, we launched our newest scientific expedition to protect the iconic river dolphins of the Amazon.
While we have made significant progress this year, there is still much work to be done. You can help us continue protecting the world’s ocean by donating to our Matching Gift Challenge. Every donation made before the end of 2021 will double our efforts to protect critical marine habitats and endangered species.
Thank you on behalf of our captains, crew, and Sea Sea Shepherd staff.
