Like for so many of you, the news that Senator Harry Reid had passed away yesterday was devastating.

The son of Searchlight, who rose from abject poverty to become the most consequential leader in Nevada history and a giant on the national political stage, Senator Reid’s only-in-America life story is truly remarkable.

Nobody worked harder or accomplished more to deliver for Nevada and defend our state’s interests. As Majority Leader, Senator Reid delivered the Affordable Care Act, passed Wall Street reform, and rescued Nevada’s economy from the depths of the Great Recession. He fought tirelessly for bold action against the climate crisis and comprehensive immigration reform. He celebrated the growing diversity of our state and led the push to make Nevada the First in the West to select our Democratic presidential candidates. Everything he did was rooted in a boundless passion for putting Nevada first and helping hardworking Americans.

On a personal level, Senator Reid was such an inspiration to me. When I ran for Congress in 2016 in a district that nobody thought Democrats could win, and again when I took on an entrenched Republican incumbent for Senate in 2018, Senator Reid was in my corner from the beginning. His friendship, his guidance, and his kindness meant the world to me – and to so many others he supported.

Senator Reid’s advice to me was simple: to know why you’re running, to stay true to your values, and to be a straight shooter. He instilled in me that it is always worth fighting the good fight. He taught me to listen and take to heart the stories of Nevadans to guide our work. He taught me that while it may be hard to change a dysfunctional Washington, my team could serve Nevadans with pride and make a tangible and powerful impact on people’s daily lives through hands-on constituent services.

Senator Reid leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, one that is reflected in the outpouring of love from his adoring family, his many friends, and his devoted staff. My thoughts and condolences are with his beloved wife Landra and the entire Reid family during this difficult time.

As we spend time with our loved ones over the holidays and look towards the new year approaching, I hope you will join me in reflecting on the tremendous legacy and countless contributions that define the amazing life of Senator Reid.

All my best,

Senator Jacky Rosen
