Dear John,

More than 50 years ago the novelist and activist James Baldwin wrote: “I still believe that we can do with this country something that has not been done before.”

We’re so grateful to you and to your fellow TakeAction Minnesota members for your deep conviction that a better future is possible – and today, we are asking you to renew this conviction by supporting TakeAction’s work.

We saw glimpses of that future in two campaigns we honored at the People’s Celebration earlier this month: the resistance to the Line 3 pipeline and the Yes 4 Minneapolis campaign to build a city where everyone can be safe and cared for, no exceptions.

Both campaigns grew from work before them and planted seeds for tomorrow. In the future we are making, our state will invest in care and community, not the destructive forces of carbon and policing.

In November, Minnesotans cast votes for possibility. Nine TakeAction Minnesota-endorsed candidates won elections in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Duluth. In the Twin Cities, voters approved ballot measures designed to slow skyrocketing rents. St. Paul was the first city in the Midwest to pass a rent stabilization ordinance that protects renters from predatory landlords, so tenants can stay in their homes and care for their families.

At the heart of our electoral outreach was a new way to talk with voters. Unlike traditional voter contact programs, TakeAction Minnesota staff and 212 volunteers built a powerful deep canvass program designed to have authentic conversations with voters that connect with people’s values and experiences. Conversations that inspire action based on hope, not fear.

In 2021, we held tens of thousands of these transformative conversations and saw the impact we are having. On election day, 44 percent of Minneapolis voters said YES to a public safety future many would have thought impossible only a year ago. Majorities of voters in Saint Paul and Minneapolis said YES to putting neighbors ahead of corporate profits. Our collective call for change, already loud, is getting louder and stronger.

TakeAction Minnesota exists because the challenges in front of us are bigger than a single election or campaign and together we are building a political home for the long haul. Join us.

As we look ahead to the 2022 elections and dream of what is possible in the coming year, we need your support. Donate now and commit to a democracy that works for all Minnesotans.
