Team,
It’s been quite a year. For anyone who accidentally slept through or who proactively tuned out 2021, we figured we’d answer some questions to get you up to speed.
(Of course, if you lived through it and know exactly what’s at stake next year, you can skip all that and donate right now to help reach our goal before this week’s FEC deadline.)
Here goes:
So what'd I miss? 2021 started great. We won two runoff elections in Georgia to secure a Democratic majority in the Senate. But then there was an attempted coup.
I'm sorry, a what? Yeah. Donald Trump rallied supporters to storm the Capitol during the certification of Joe Biden’s victory — openly threatening the lives of members of Congress and then-Vice President Pence. It didn’t work, but at least five people died as a result of the violence.
Horrible. Well, at least that’s the end of the Donald Trump era, right? Not exactly. He’s not president anymore, which is a good start. But his allies in Congress are pretending the attack on January 6th didn’t happen. Sen. Ron Johnson even likened the insurrection to a tourist visit. Now, many elected officials are sowing doubts about the legitimacy of the 2020 election to strip away voting rights in their states. It’s a pretty scary time for democracy. And as for Trump, he’s talking about running again in 2024.
What do we do about it? That’s the good news. Most Americans believe that January 6th was a horrific stain on our democracy. Anyone who helped orchestrate that attack must be held accountable, and any member of Congress who aided and abetted the seditionists should have their careers ended.
How are Amy and Democratic Majority Action involved? That’s the exciting part. Our mission in the next election is to take on and defeat key members of the Sedition Caucus in Congress — lawmakers who showed their true colors on Jan. 6th and face tough re-election fights. Our first target is Ron Johnson, senator from Wisconsin.
Why Ron Johnson? For one, he deserves to lose. He’s been a leading voice downplaying the attack on the Capitol and is currently trying to change oversight of federal elections in his state to the Republican-controlled legislature. He’s also been a prominent source of misinformation about the COVID vaccine…
Oh yeah, the COVID vaccine — it must be nice to have the pandemic in the rearview, right? Sigh. You’ll have to get that update somewhere else… Back to Ron Johnson, the other factor is this is a seat we certainly can win. Wisconsin is a battleground. Though Trump barely won there in 2016, Democrats flipped the governor’s seat in 2018 and Joe Biden won the state in 2020.
Where else are you focused? We’ll be finalizing our map in the months ahead. We already know we’ll be taking on Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado. Among other reasons, she’s a proud ringleader of the Sedition Caucus — going as far as to broadcast the location of her House colleagues during the attack, putting their lives in danger. She barely squeaked out a victory in 2020, but redistricting looks like it’s going to give her a boost. Our mission is to make sure every voter in her district knows about the role she played on January 6th.
Are you just going to spend a lot of money on negative TV ads?
OK. How can I help? Our big FEC deadline is on Friday — we set a goal of getting 1,000 new grassroots donations before we close the books, and we’re just 602 away. Chip in right now, and help take the fight to the worst of the worst members of the Sedition Caucus in Congress.
Thank you! Team McGrath
