What’s your favorite holiday tradition? Mine has to be decorating our Christmas tree with my son.  

Every family celebrates in their own special way, but one thing’s for certain – we celebrate together.  

At our southern border, it’s a different story. This year, hundreds of asylum-seeking children spent the holidays alone once again after being separated from their families years ago. As these kids wait to be reunited with their parents, others are arriving in the U.S. hungry, tired and distressed after a treacherous journey. Many don’t know where their next meal will come from and have no opportunities to go to school and learn. 

One father shared the harrowing story of his family’s trek from Nicaragua, recalling how his pregnant wife and 8 children were chased into Mexico. For months, they lived in a dangerous camp as he tried to save money for their trip to the U.S. – only to lose it after being forced to pay bribes.  

John, families like these should be met with care and compassion when they finally reach our southern border – not cruelty.
