The Los Angeles Police Department said Arely Anaya and Luis Avalos, the parents of a newborn, a 4-year-old and a 5-year-old may have fled to Reno, Nevada last week, according to witnesses. The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services contacted the LAPD on Monday to advise the department about a drug and child neglect investigation involving the children. Arely Anaya and the newborn who was born on Dec. 2, both tested positive for cocaine, prompting the notification to DCFS. The agency unsuccessfully tried contacting the parents several times throughout the first half of December, the LAPD said. "The parents were made aware of DCFS intention to remove the children from the home and place them in protective custody," police said. "The parents no longer responded to phone calls, nor answered their door for DCFS." Social workers notified the police that they were seeking a court order to place the children in protective custody and an arrest warrant for the parents. When police officers visited the family home in the San Fernando Valley, they weren't there. "Witnesses advised they were aware of the DCFS investigation and knew the parents were worried their children would be taken away," the LAPD said. January -- A window into the nightmare of living next to the 405 underpass. Lesson learned: No one understands this crisis like the people who live near it on a daily basis. In this story, an indomitable, insightful and endlessly compassionate woman bore witness to the tragedy unfolding just outside her beloved home of more than a decade. But her efforts to get the city to act before the tragedy she (accurately) predicted were unsuccessful. Service agencies dropped off food, set up porta potties costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, but did nothing to stem the obvious mental health and drug scene that flourished under the freeway near her house. 2. March -- The High Cost of Low Cost Housing in Venice. Lesson learned: HHH-funded housing is expensive…by design. This analysis of two HHH-funded project in Venice, both of which were ultimately approved by the Venice Neighborhood Council, took a hard look at their startling costs and attempted to come to an understanding of why projects like these are so much more expensive than similar, private builds. Two facts stand out: The small pool of HHH-approved developers have a history of building expensive projects, and the higher the price of the project, the higher their developer's fees. 3. April -- Venice Residents Say 'There's Enough Beds to House Westminster Encampment, Bonin Won’t’. Lesson learned: Actions have consequences, but inaction could get you recalled. Venice residents and HAAVEN co-founders Heidi Roberts and John Betz met with CD11 staff member Dexter O'Connell to try to get the Councilman to do something about the dangerous conditions encampments near Westminster Elementary were creating. They even offered the Councilman 40 shared housing beds to accommodate any relocated campers, but were rebuffed. In a follow up article posted around the same time, Roberts -- who had previously worked with Bonin on an anti-homelessness initiative -- announced her support for the nascent Recall Bonin effort. "He had a blue mask on so I couldn't understand what he said. But whatever he said, it just looked confrontational for me so that's when I backed up and bent down to pick up the dog. That gave him the opportunity to hit me on my head and push me away," said Marinelli. He said the thief ripped Luca out of his hands and jumped in the car, catching his coat as he slammed the door. He says he was dragged about 200 yards. I’ve got lacerations on my arm and my shoulder, and from my hip all the way down the side of my leg, I have like a third-degree burn from the gravel ripping the skin off my body," he said. NBC 4 'Heroic' Officer Ended Deadly Colorado Shooting Spree: How It All Played Out When a gunman opened fire inside a Broadway tattoo parlor Monday night, the shooting spree that would zigzag through Denver and Lakewood was just getting started. Less than an hour later, the rampage ended with his death on the streets of Lakewood's upscale Belmar shopping district, as the final gunfight with a police officer — herself injured — shattered a pizza restaurant's two large windows, sending shocked diners diving for cover behind overturned tables. "One of my pizza cooks was crawling on the ground, coming around the corner," said Tyler Gunderson, the front-of-the-house manager for The Rock Wood-Fired Pizza on West Alaska Place, east of Wadsworth Boulevard. When it was all over, five of the victims in Monday's shooting spree had died and another two had sustained serious injuries, including the officer, in one of the most unusual, confounding multiple-victim shootings the metro area has seen. Lyndon James McLeod, 47, was identified by police as the gunman Tuesday. Earnest, 22, pleaded guilty in September to a 113-count federal indictment that charged him with civil rights, hate crimes and weapons charges stemming from the April 27, 2019, attack on the synagogue at Chabad of Poway and arson at the Dar-ul-Arqam mosque in Escondido about a month earlier. The shooting killed Lori Gilbert-Kaye, 60, and wounded the founding Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, 8-year-old Noya Dahan and her 34-year-old uncle, Almog Peretz. Earnest was also charged with state charges of murder, attempted murder and hate crimes in San Diego Superior Court. In July, he pleaded guilty to those charges in a deal with prosecutors that allowed him to avoid the death penalty and instead get a sentence of life in prison without parole. Los Angeles Daily News City Of LA, Metro Team Up To Launch Cyber Security Mobile Phone App The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Tuesday it has teamed up with the city of Los Angeles to launch a free mobile security app — to protect people in L.A. County from cybersecurity threats on public WiFi systems. “Providing a safe and secure environment for Los Angeles County’s 10 million residents to live and work is becoming just as important online as it has always been offline,” said Metro Board Chair and L.A. County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis. “As L.A. County continues to expand public Wi-Fi access, including on its entire fleet of Metro buses, LA Secure offers an industry-leading technology to ensure all the activity they conduct on their mobile devices remains safe, private and secure.” Officials say the “LA Secure” app will provide immediate protection against new and evolving threats on both iPhone and Android mobile devices. Once the app is downloaded, it alerts the user to threats in real-time and offers information about how to proceed. If someone attempts to connect to a rogue WiFi network, the app will immediately notify the user about the security risk. The app also provides protection against “phishing” — emails designed to fraudulently gather personal information. CBS 2 California COVID-19 Hospitalizations Up 25% In Last Week COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising rapidly in California, placing fresh strain on healthcare systems worn thin by nearly two years on the frontlines of the pandemic. Though the number of COVID-19 patients statewide remains far below the high marks seen during last winter’s surge, the daily count has swelled — a likely byproduct of a spike in coronavirus cases that officials say is being fueled by the heavily mutated Omicron variant. California recorded 4,378 coronavirus-positive patients in hospitals Monday, an increase of 377 from the day before. The number of Californians hospitalized with COVID-19 has swelled by nearly 25% since Dec. 20. The rise has been even steeper in Los Angeles County — which saw its daily patient count grow by 43% since Dec. 20, from 748 to 1,069. Orange County reported a 71% increase during the same time, from 188 to 322. It’s unclear how many of the new hospitalizations are due to Omicron or whether the Delta variant remains dominant. Though there are some data indicating that Omicron may cause less severe symptoms than Delta — which has long been the dominant version of the coronavirus circulating in California — health officials have noted that a significant uptick in infections is still likely to send many patients to the hospital. Los Angeles Times Nationwide Increase In Child COVID Hospitalizations Prompts Worry In California As Omicron Surges A nationwide rise in the number of children hospitalized with COVID-19 is sparking concern among California health officials as the omicron variant continues to drive infection numbers. Nearly 2,000 children across the country are hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID cases - up by approximately 700 pediatric patients compared to a month ago, according to federal data. Daily pediatric COVID-related hospital admissions increased 80% over four weeks, with an average of more than 260 children being admitted to the hospital each day. California officials fear a surge in pediatric hospitalizations after a "striking increase" in new hospital admissions for children was reported in New York state. "Unfortunately NY is seeing an increase in pediatric hospitalizations (primarily amongst the unvaccinated), and they have similar 5-11yo vaccination rates," tweeted California state epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pan. "Please give your children the gift of vaccine protection as soon as possible as our case #s are increasing rapidly."
