I hope you have been enjoying a wonderful holiday season with family and friends and are looking forward to the coming year.

My name is Gisselle Godinez and I am the Development Coordinator at the Independent Institute. I echo the message of hope that David and Mary Theroux have shared with you these past two weeks.

I graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 2019, witnessing firsthand the disastrous results of a socialist worldview both on campus and in the surrounding city with rising housing costs for students and residents, increasing homelessness, rampant crime, curtailing of free speech, and the exodus of well-established small businesses.

It was shocking to see how a city with so much potential and a university that boasts some of the world’s brightest minds could be so void of alternative solutions. Walking down the streets of Berkeley is a reminder that there is a lack of diversity in higher education––diversity in ideas, that is.

I’m very concerned for my generation.

Among my peers, groupthink pervades, Big Government “solutions” (or quick-fixes) are championed, and many support a system that sacrifices individual liberty as a result of their limited exposure to better alternative ideas.

But there is hope.

Because of the work put forth by the Independent Institute––from our Love Gov ([link removed]) YouTube series and Catalyst ([link removed]) website and social media suite, all rooted in our peer-reviewed research––minds are opening, hearts are being stirred to action and hands are hard at work building the future of liberty.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is talking to supporters, young and old alike, about the value of independent thinking. It’s because of you that we are inspired to continue disseminating liberty-affirming, virtue-enhancing, market-based solutions to today’s most pressing challenges.
