John,
We’re taking the fight for data privacy and protection to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and we need your help to win.
For years, the agency tasked with protecting privacy has failed the public by abandoning its power to address dangerous surveillance and data practices. That could all change in the near future. Lina Khan, the new FTC Chair, has signaled an interest in the agency using its authority to reign in Big Tech’s abusive corporate practices.1
Backed by an executive order calling on the FTC to use rulemaking to address unfair surveillance and data practices, Chair Khan has the power, authority, and political will to take immediate action.2 But it won’t happen unless we organize a mass grassroots mobilization to pressure Chair Khan and the FTC commissioners to put this on the docket in 2022.
We need 48 monthly donors to ensure we can sustain the fight and cover the costs of coordinating civil rights groups, filing rulemaking petitions, organizing in-person actions, and developing tools that can facilitate thousands of responses at key inflection points. Can you be one of those people and help us defeat Big Tech in 2022?
Monthly Gifts to Defeat Big Tech
It’s mind-boggling to think of the surveillance and data practices that Big Tech corporations have gotten away with, especially considering the depths of the harms inflicted on communities across the country and the public at large. From false arrests to job insecurity to arming police departments with city-wide surveillance networks, Big Tech has amassed unheard of power to negatively impact our lives by surveilling and recording everything we do and say.3,4,5
The FTC has the power to keep all of us safe from this abuse. They have the authority to begin a rulemaking process aimed at stopping these disturbing surveillance and data practices, as well as additional power to immediately protect our privacy by enforcing the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
This is our best chance to take on Big Tech and win. It’s incumbent on us to do everything possible to get the FTC to stop these industry-wide unfair and deceptive practices. If you can, please make a monthly gift—in any amount you can—to help stop surveillance and data abuse.
Thanks for your support and all you do,
Ayele at Fight for the Future
