Number of the Day - 23 pounds of ice cream eaten annually by average American

July 22, 2019: July is National Ice Cream Month, and yesterday was National Ice Cream Day. This celebration was launched with a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.[1] Today, the average American consumes 23 pounds of ice cream annually.[2]

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the 10 most popular flavors of ice cream are:

  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate
  • Cookies N’ Cream
  • Mint Chocolate Chip
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  • Buttered Pecan
  • Cookie Dough
  • Strawberry
  • Moose Tracks
  • Neapolitan

Not surprisingly, June and July are the busiest months for ice cream production. But, over the course of a year, 898 million gallons of ice cream are produced.
