When I got the news that Senator Harry Reid had passed away yesterday, my heart simply broke. For as long as I can remember, Senator Reid had been a sincere friend to the Cortez family. 

He was just a kid from Searchlight, who had the humblest of beginnings, and went on to lead an extraordinary life, not because of his titles, but because of his fights. He fought for every man and woman across the Silver State because he truly loved our home and its people. 

Senator Reid was one of the most powerful, devoted and effective leaders Nevada has ever had. Simply put, he was a champion for the Silver State. He helped preserve our lands for future generations, strengthened our rural communities and built up our great cities. He always told people that Nevada was a microcosm of the country, and I think that’s why he was such a master legislator. He understood America because he listened to our communities and worked hard for them. 

America is a better country because of the leadership of Senator Reid. Nevada has lost a son, America has lost a fighter and I have lost a truly remarkable friend and mentor. If there’s one thing we should never forget about him, it’s that he never gave up – no matter what. 

To the Reid family, his friends and staff, I am truly sorry for your loss. His legacy lives on through so many he helped and loved along the way.
