JMC partner helps students tackle politics and race at the dinner table
As families gather this holiday season, many will avoid discussion of politics ([link removed]) around the dinner table.

After all, Emily Post tells us these are not topics for pleasant company.

But the old adage is being put to the test at Coastal Carolina University where political discussions at dinner aren’t just encouraged —they’re required.
JMC supports the Cincinnatus Center at CCU's program: “The Forum on Liberty and the American Founding.” Three JMC faculty partners host a group of stand-out undergraduate students for a monthly meal and an in-depth discussion engaging the American political tradition with key issues in current politics.

This Fall, 16 undergraduate students gathered to discuss prominent 18th and 19th century African American thinkers —from Phillis Wheatley to Frederick Douglass —and tied the ideas into modern debates on racism including Critical Race Theory, cultural appropriation, and slavery reparations.
For senior Jake Ross, it's one of the only places on campus to find real debate.

“The whole point of higher education is not to reaffirm everything you think, but challenge your beliefs,” Ross said,
“Free speech on campus seems to be more restrictive these days but this environment gives us an opportunity to discuss these topics in a civil way with civil debate. This group has given me a chance to get outside of the echo chamber and challenge my own beliefs.”

Programs like the Forum provide students with an opportunity to have these important conversations around the table and discuss sensitive topics with honesty, poise, and respect for others —qualities many say we are sorely lacking in today’s political climate.

At JMC, we are proud to support more than 60 partner programs ([link removed]) like the Cinncinatus Center across the country that provide much-needed civic formation for undergraduate students. Our goal is to add 15 new programs a year and challenge more students to challenge their beliefs.

But why stop there? Maybe this is something you can do with your loved ones this holiday season.

Will you help us meet our goal and bring these important programs to campuses across the country?
