Many of our volunteers come from the very villages that suffer from
the diseases we fight. These courageous people spend long hours
traveling dirt roads, patiently teaching the benefits of good hygiene
and modern medicine. They distribute antibiotics, and some are trained
to perform pain-relieving eye surgeries.
Today, we are in the final stretches of ending Guinea worm disease
throughout the world and stopping river blindness and malaria in the

Our Guinea Worm Eradication Program started with an estimated 3.5
million cases in 1985. We may have as few as 14 cases this year in
just four countries in Africa. We also are closing in on the last
cases of river blindness deep in the Amazon and malaria in Haiti and
the Dominican Republic.
Ending these millennia-old diseases requires dedication and
determination from our staff and volunteers and from caring
individuals like you. Your gift will help empower some of the
world's poorest people with the resources for treatment,
surveillance, and preventive education. And you'll support our
peace programs staff as they help resolve armed conflict - a
serious obstacle to seeking out the last cases of Guinea worm disease.
