🌱 #DecolonizeConservation
#OurLandOurNature
We’re leading the fight to #DecolonizeConservation, and in September organized the world’s first congress on this vital issue. Bringing together more than 30 speakers, many Indigenous, from 18 countries, with major press coverage, thousands attending online, and linked protests in France, Spain and Italy, this ground-breaking event shone a powerful spotlight on the catastrophic effects of traditional “fortress conservation.”
“Deceit, cover-ups, dishonesty”
An unprecedented hearing in the US Congress – prompted by Survival’s lobbying – lambasted WWF over abuses of tribal people in conservation areas; shredded what little was left of WWF’s reputation; and showed that the game’s up for WWF. ‘Dishonest,” “embarrassing,” “irresponsible,” “shocking” – little wonder the WWF official at the hearing looked shell-shocked as Representatives lined up to denounce its persistent use of US tax dollars to fund horrific abuses in the name of conservation.

30x30: the biggest land grab in history
In the teeth of Covid-19, we launched our #BigGreenLie campaign, showing how plans to turn 30% of Earth into Protected Areas would mean the theft of Indigenous lands on a huge scale.

Thousands watched our launch video; more importantly, we’re also changing minds and influencing policy at the highest levels.

🏹 Uncontacted Tribes
Two down, four to go
You sent over 7,000 emails to the Peruvian government, demanding it do what’s right and protect uncontacted tribes’ territories before they’re destroyed forever. Your incredible effort, together with campaigning by Peru’s Indigenous organizations, saw two of the territories finally recognized and protected in law.

Land Protection Orders
This year we shone a spotlight on Land Protection Orders: little-known but vital protections for uncontacted tribes whose lands have not yet been officially recognized. President Bolsonaro and his agribusiness allies want to let them expire – we mobilized thousands around the world to demand they be renewed. With our allies, we scored two victories, as the LPOs for the Piripkura and Pirititi territories were renewed. 2022 will be a pivotal year for the campaign, with more LPOs up for renewal…

#StopBrazilsGenocide
Brazil’s President Bolsonaro boasts of his desire to destroy the country’s Indigenous peoples for good and is doing everything he can to achieve it – and they’ve protested, marched and mobilized in response. Survival has stood shoulder to shoulder with them, organizing protests across Europe and the US, lobbying and publicizing. We continued our long-standing support for the Amazon Guardians and their fight to protect their forest for their families and their uncontacted Awá neighbors.

🚜 Adivasis against coal

In 2021 we launched a major new campaign to expose and oppose plans for a massive expansion of coal mining on Indigenous lands. India’s Indigenous peoples (known as Adivasis) have been bravely resisting, in the face of harassment, arrests and evictions. The unique Hasdeo Forest, home to 20,000 Adivasis, is a key target for the coal miners.

Speaking out at #COP26
As we knew India’s Prime Minister Modi would be boasting of his green credentials at #COP26, we wanted to make sure Adivasi voices were heard. Our event at the parallel People’s Summit offered a platform to Adivasi activists and leaders, and was the only event at the Summit to be translated into multiple Indigenous languages. And like thousands of others at COP, we marched!

⚓ #MayflowersKill
Highlighting ongoing colonialism
As part of our ongoing collaboration with Indigenous peoples in the U.S., we created and launched two Activist kits – an Educator Toolkit and a Social Media Toolkit that provide resources for people of all ages about the Indigenous history of the U.S. Our #MayflowersKill campaign shows how colonialism continues and is being replicated in other parts of the world.

Straight from COP26, Alessandra Munduruku stresses that without Indigenous peoples, there’ll never be solutions to the climate crisis. She demands an end to the false solutions governments and companies are pushing while they continue to pollute the planet, and for indigenous land rights to be upheld: the best way to protect the most biodiverse places on Earth.

📢 Tribal Voice
Our long-standing Tribal Voice project has produced hundreds of videos, offering a platform to Indigenous people to speak out globally on the issues that matter to them. In a time of lockdowns and travel restrictions, it’s more vital than ever.

🏃♀️Run for Survival
Last May, hundreds of you all over the world took a step further for tribal peoples by walking, swimming, biking and of course running our first ever #RunForSurvival! To all of our wonderful fundraisers, a huge thank you for all of your support - we cannot thank you enough.
