Fare Thee Well, Mr. Green and Welcome Ms. Green
Former Sierra magazine columnist and bred-in-the-bone Wisconsin farmboy Bob Schildgen—better known to this audience as Mr. Green—is hanging up his Ask Mr. Green spurs and easing into a rip-roaring retirement of full-time rabble-rousing on behalf of the environment. Schildgen is passing the torch to a new generation,

That’s a Big “No Can Do,” Mr. President
Last month, the Keystone 1 pipeline leaked 830,000 gallons of tar sands into a North Dakota wetland. This was just the most recent in a series of more than a dozen leaks and spills, yet President Trump remains determined to approve the proposed and larger Keystone XL pipeline—spills be damned. We have until November 18 to speak out and demand that environmental laws not be waived in the administration’s rush to get KXL approved.

Tell the Trump administration that the Keystone XL pipeline is simply too risky to build.

Get Your Lorax On and Speak for the Trees!
The Forest Service just proposed to slash protections for over 9 million acres of Alaska's Tongass National Forest—an area bigger than Yellowstone, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Parks combined. This would devastate some of the last pristine stands of old-growth western red cedar, Sitka spruce, and western hemlock. It would also set a dangerous precedent for forests across the country. If corporations can clearcut in the Tongass—the largest temperate rainforest on Earth—no national forest is truly safe.

Resist the Rollback
Methane pollution standards keep our air clean and our families healthier. Even many companies in the oil and gas industry admit that these standards are a commonsense, low-cost way to reduce dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. Yet President Trump and EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler continue to create loopholes that benefit corporate polluters at the expense of public health by recklessly rolling back these protections.

Tell Administrator Wheeler that you are so not cool with his dangerous rollback of methane pollution standards.

No One Trumps the Rule of Law
We rely on the rule of law and a strong, functioning democracy to protect the health of our communities and our environment. Unfortunately, the current occupant of the Oval Office continues to brazenly flaunt—many would say “break”—the law with impunity. President Trump must be held accountable for his actions. That’s why the Sierra Club and our allies will hold “Nobody Is Above the Law” events nationwide the night before the House of Representatives votes on impeachment.

To Have or to Have Not
Is climate change a reason to not have kids? Are you—or is someone you know—grappling with this dilemma? Sierra magazine’s Katie O’Reilly traced her own process for reconciling the biological imperative to procreate with the rational, intellectual, emotional, and scientific reality of global warming.

On Fire
Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune reflects on California’s 2019 wildfire season, which burned thousands of acres, destroyed homes and businesses, forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate, and left over a million Californians without power. “We need to act on the bold, far-reaching proposals put forth by youth climate activists and residents of frontline communities—now.” he says.

Nigeria's Best Hope Against Climate Change
Girls' education is an effective but all-too-often overlooked tool to combat climate change. One organization in Nigeria is helping girls living in poverty stay in school, access reproductive services, and learn how to be climate-resilient.

We Are What We Consume
Corporations drive consumption habits, and in so doing they help create a culture of commodification in which we identify as consumers of goods, services, and brands. Put differently, we are what we consume, and in turn, we consume what we’re told we are. How can we better understand the intersections of climate, consumption, and population, and what can they tell us about the future of a warming and more populated world?

Cruelty as State Policy
“It’s abundantly clear that the United States’ immigration policy is run by extremely cruel and inept politicians,” says Javier Sierra, the Sierra Club’s associate director of communications. “These are people who compare Latino families to rats [and] dream of shooting immigrants in the legs … so they can build Trump’s medieval, racist wall.

Connecting Kids With Nature in the Motor City
"Imagine children climbing trees, picking dandelions, splashing in puddles, jumping in a pile of leaves, and swimming in a lake. Experiences like these are key moments in a child's life, but not every child is able to access and enjoy the great outdoors. People of color and low-income families are less likely to live near green spaces or regularly spend time in nature.” One outings leader with the Sierra Club’s Detroit Outdoors program is determined to change that.

The Long Arm of the Environmental Law Program
The Sierra Club has two cases heading to the US Supreme Court—hold onto your hats! In both cases, we’ll be defending victories won in lower courts—victories that would protect the Appalachian Trail from the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and keep Maui County residents’ water clean. Arguing these cases will be a dream team of attorneys and Supreme Court experts from the Sierra Club, the Southern Environmental Law Center, and Earthjustice.
