EDF's innovative idea to leverage crop insurance for the good of farmers, insurers and the environment is one of my favorite win-win-win examples.
Nearly every farmer needs crop insurance. We knew if we could use it to advance conservation, we could have a huge impact. So, we set about devising the most effective way to harness that far-reaching impact.
We decided to use data collected by farmers we’ve partnered with to show USDA how conservation can reduce the risk of crop failure, and to persuade them that insurance should reward farmers who choose to adopt those practices.
By collaborating with farmers, we say two important things:
- First, we really believe that you, as farmers, can do good for the environment.
- Second, we really believe that what’s good for the environment will be good for you - so we don’t need or want to take away your choice.
In other words: we’re walking the talk. In doing so, we’ve recruited farmers who share those beliefs and are eager to work with us. Who share our vision of a not-too-distant future where people and nature can thrive together.
It’s only thanks to the generous support of members like you that we can engage in this kind of work. Your support allows us to sit down with all kinds of people and communities, share our environmental expertise and learn from their first-hand experiences on the ground in their communities or industries.
Please donate now so we can keep forging relationships with unexpected allies, sharing our knowledge and learning from each other to develop innovative solutions to the biggest environmental problems we face today.
For just a few more days, your one-time gift to EDF will be matched $2-for-$1, tripling your impact. The more you give, the bigger match you’ll unlock - allowing us to recruit and empower more unexpected allies to take bold action to benefit our Earth.
And if you start a monthly gift, you’ll also unlock a bonus match from the Wilson Charitable Trust: a $3-for-$1 total match on your first 12 gifts!
Thank you for believing in the power of working together,
