John,

We did it!!

Tonight, Democrats flipped both the House of Delegates and the state Senate in Virginia. Our candidates ran tough races where every single vote mattered, and because of your hard work, they will proudly go to Richmond in January as the majority party. And, all of our 2017 alumni running for re-election won!

Tonight was historic, and we’re ready to keep the momentum going straight into 2020. To do that, we’ll need to see a large increase in contributions to Sister District to grow our organization. Please help us get a head start with a $20.20 contribution tonight!

We Flipped Virginia!

Virginia, the state that just two years ago was overwhelmingly controlled by Republicans, is now a Democratic trifecta. Finally, the majority of voters in Virginia will have a majority of electoral power, and these new legislators can barely wait to get to work on the important issues that matter to everyday folks, from voting rights to healthcare to gun violence prevention. These are also the legislators who will be in power during the next redistricting cycle in 2021.

After nearly a decade under the grip of Republican gerrymandering, Virginians will have the opportunity for fair representation in their state and in Congress. What a night!

Victory at Last

In 2017, Sister District supported Shelly Simonds in her bid for House of Delegates, and she tied her race, ultimately losing in a namedraw. Tonight, Shelly was the first of our candidates to declare victory, winning her race by a substantial margin! This is a long time coming for Shelly and for those who supported her, and we can’t wait to see her in action.

The Sister District Community is on Fire

You blew 2018 out of the water. Our GOTV numbers are still coming in, but Sister District volunteers raised $735,380 directly to candidates, made 204,326 phone calls (28% more than last year!), sent 201,202 postcards, knocked 19,324 doors, and sent 229,687 texts. And we almost DOUBLED our per-candidate average for dollars and dials from last year.

To date, we’ve raised over $1.85M for candidates and reached out to over 1.75M voters. Collectively, you are the ones saving our democracy.

Results So Far

As expected, many of our Virginia candidates are in incredibly tight races, and we may not hear conclusive results until later this week (or longer). In Mississippi, our Head of Campaigns is on the ground, and he is reporting record turnout with races that are still too close to call. We will continuously update our website and social media as we confirm the outcome of each race. Right now, here’s what we know:
