Founded by the late, great Sister Barbara Jordan and our legendary brother Norman Lear, and now led by brother Ben Jealous – a leader steeped in the movement for people-powered change – People For the American Way and its members are doing the work to realize an America in which all people are treated with decency and dignity.
People For the American Way is a truly intersectional family of members, activists, and advocates ... one that’s uniquely suited for the challenges we now face, and the task of bringing solidarity to the movement for justice. And how we need it now more than ever...
We’ve got one of our major parties that’s now more nakedly authoritarian every single day. A party and a movement with neo-fascist sensibilities that’s hostile to democratic processes and democratic (small “d”) values.
And we’ve got so much more work to do to break down arcane procedural barriers – especially ones with racist histories, like the filibuster – and pass the urgently needed federal legislation that will finally protect voting rights in this country from the recent onslaught of Jim Crow-style voter suppression. If our choice is between the filibuster and democracy, you know which one has to win.
