Los Angeles Daily News Man Accused Of Taking Up-Skirt, Bathroom Photos Of Women Across LA, Ventura Counties Ventura County Sheriffs arrested a man for filming multiple women without their permission, including up their skirts, in public places on Friday. Juventino Jesus Miranda Cardona was arrested on Christmas Eve for invasion of privacy. The arrest comes after an investigation into an incident that took place back in October, according to the sheriff's office. On Oct. 27, Thousand Oaks Police responded to The Oaks Mall, for a complaint about a man recording a woman in the bathroom. According to officials, the woman confronted the man, who claimed he didn't have a cell phone. The woman however was able to take a photo of whom she thought was recording her from over the bathroom stall. From that photo, police say they identified Cardona. Upon collection of Cardona's cell phone, police say they found multiple videos and pictures of women using the bathroom and shopping in public places. Some videos were taken from underneath women's skirts, according to authorities. Officials say they believe the photos were taken across Ventura County and even potentially in Los Angeles County, at places like bus stops, and stores like Target, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, and malls across the area. FOX 11 California Man Opened Fire On Family As They Opened Presents On Christmas, Killing 2 A 23-year-old man in California has been arrested and charged with murder, accused of fatally shooting his grandmother and his father’s girlfriend as they opened presents on Christmas. Austin Alvarez was arrested Saturday on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in the deaths of Magdalena Alvarez, 58, and Meisa Rashid, 39. His bail was set at $2.5 million. Fresno Sheriff's detectives said that Alvarez arrived at a home in the 17000 block of Goodfellow Ave. in Reedley where some of his family members had gathered to exchange Christmas gifts. "During the visit, Alvarez fired shots striking his grandmother (Magdalena Alvarez) and his father’s girlfriend (Meisa Rashid)," the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. "As Alvarez was leaving the house, he noticed his father in a parked vehicle. Alvarez fired shots in his direction, but did not strike him." Detectives have not yet determined Alvarez’s motive, but said he pulled a gun at some point during the visit and began shooting at family members. Alvarez fled the home in his GMC pickup truck and fired shots at his father, who was in a parked vehicle outside, but did not hit him, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities found Alvarez about 10 miles away and took him into custody. FOX 11 California Police And Sheriff's Deputies Join Forces To Curb Spike In Catalytic Converter Thefts The job usually gets done in less than five minutes: Thieves jack up the vehicle, slide underneath and shear off the catalytic converter — an emissions control device in the exhaust system. It's easy — and prevalent, police say. In San Diego County, reports of catalytic converter thefts jumped from 393 last year to 2,056 this year as of Dec. 9, according to police officials tracking the crime. That's a 423 percent increase. Nationwide, State Farm Insurance has reported "an explosion" in catalytic converter theft claims, noting that California was the worst state for the crime. "This has become a trend rather than a series (of thefts)," Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Peak said. Police say thieves target catalytic converters because of the precious metals used to make the devices, which reduce harmful vehicle emissions. Thieves sell the stolen converters for hundreds of dollars to scrapyards or recycling centers where they can be melted to extract the metals — palladium, rhodium and platinum. Many experts say the value of the metals — worth thousands of dollars — is on the rise. "Right now the recycling value of catalytic converters is extremely high," Escondido police Lt. Bode Berreth said. During "Operation Hammer Strike," investigators eradicated a total of 56 greenhouses found in those locations and five indoor grow locations. Investigators said that the cannabis cultivations were not in compliance with California's Medical and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MAUCRSA) and San Bernardino County's ordinance prohibiting Commercial Cannabis Activity. San Bernardino County has a law prohibiting Commercial Cannabis Activity, including growing marijuana plants outdoors. FOX 11 Denver Area Shooting Spree Leaves 5 Dead Including Shooter; Officer Wounded A deadly shooting spree across multiple locations in Denver and Lakewood ended on Monday night when the suspect was shot and killed on the streets of Lakewood's busy Belmar shopping district, officials say. The suspect is believed to have killed four people and wounded at least three others including a Lakewood police officer who required surgery Monday night, according to John Romero, a Lakewood Police Department spokesman. Romero's comments about the violence came at a news conference Monday night held just across the street from Belmar, which Lakewood bills as its downtown. Romero was joined by Denver police Chief Paul Pazen who referred to events of the night as a "killing spree." The investigation is ongoing but the two police departments believe one unidentified man is to blame. "We believe this individual was responsible for this very violent series of events that took place in the Denver-metro area," Pazen said. Denver Post Florida Police Departments Fighting To Entice, Hire And Retain Officers Brandon Diaz was driving around the north side of Chicago when a blank billboard caught his attention. The summer-like, autumn weather would soon give way to gray skies and bone-chilling temperatures, and Diaz, the head of the Fort Lauderdale police union. came up with a plan to capitalize on that. The end goal was to lure cold, COVID-restricted Chicago police officers to sunny, freedom-touting South Florida. On Dec. 3, the appeal to police officers in the Windy City rose above the highway: “Wish you were here! WE’RE HIRING. FLPDjobs.com.” The message is blanketed with a background of palm trees and the ocean, and a Fort Lauderdale police cruiser perches prominently along the beach in the foreground. That very day, three Chicago police officers sent Diaz photos of their completed applications. The next day there was more interest. Even more followed. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department, as well as numerous other law enforcement agencies across the nation and state, have been fighting crime with lower-than-usual staff numbers on their staffs. South Florida Sun-Sentinel Public Safety News Bystanders Pull Man From Burning RV In Chatsworth Two bystanders rescued a man from a flaming motor home in Chatsworth Monday before Los Angeles County Fire Department crews arrived to extinguish the blaze, authorities said. The man had impaired mobility, and the bystanders helped him out of the vehicle and "prevented him from serious harm and saved his life," said LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey. The fire in the 20900 block of Nordhoff Street was reported at 10:05 a.m. According to Humphrey, the recreational vehicle was parked on private property when the bystanders heard a popping noise, saw the fire and jumped a fence to get to the man stuck inside, Humphrey said. The man was taken to a hospital and suffered a minor burn on his hand, but had stable vital signs. The fire was contained quickly, but the vehicle was completely destroyed, and the cause was under investigation, Humphrey said. FOX 11 LA Hospitals Short Staffed As COVID-19 Hospitalizations Continue To Climb The number of COVID-19-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals continued an unnerving climb Monday as the virus' Omicron variant continued to fuel rising infection numbers in the Southland -- including among health care workers. According to state figures, there were 966 COVID-positive patients in L.A. hospitals as of Monday, up sharply from 904 on Sunday. Two-hundred of those patients were being treated in intensive care, up from 188 a day earlier. The hospital number has been on a steady climb over the past several weeks, far surpassing the roughly 550 patients reported in late November. The rise has shadowed a dramatic increase in daily COVID case numbers, which surpassed 11,000 on Saturday. Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer warned last week that if infections continue such a dramatic rise, the daily case number could top 20,000 by the new year, its highest level of the pandemic. She also said data show that unvaccinated people are 21 times more likely to be hospitalized than vaccinated people. Los Angeles County reported 7,425 new cases of COVID-19 and nine additional deaths on Monday, with the numbers artificially low due to standard reporting delays from the weekend. The county has logged 1,623,442 cases of COVID-19 and 27,555 fatalities associated with the virus since the pandemic began. WestSide Current Omicron ‘Going To Get Worse Before It Gets Better’ As California Hospitalizations Rise The number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in California over the weekend reached levels not seen in months as the rapid spread of the Omicron variant caused major airline interruptions and sent throngs of people to testing sites. Officials said they expected Omicron’s spread to worsen in the coming weeks, with President Biden promising the federal government will do all it can to assist states facing surges in coronavirus cases. Biden acknowledged those who faced long waits for tests over the holiday and said his administration was seeking to alleviate the issue. “Seeing how tough it was for folks to get a test this weekend shows we have more work to do,” Biden said, “and we’re doing it.” There were 4,001 coronavirus patients hospitalized Sunday — California’s highest single-day total since Oct. 9 and a nearly 14% increase from last week. Some areas are contending with even sharper rises. Los Angeles County has seen a 30% bump in COVID-19 hospitalizations since last week. In Orange County, the patient count has swelled nearly 45% during the same period. Los Angeles Times CDC Shortens Recommended Covid-19 Isolation And Quarantine Time The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday shortened the recommended times that people should isolate when they've tested positive for Covid-19 from 10 days to five days if they don't have symptoms -- and if they wear a mask around others for at least five more days. The CDC also shortened the recommended time for people to quarantine if they are exposed to the virus to a similar five days if they are vaccinated. People who are fully vaccinated and boosted may not need to quarantine at all, the CDC said. "Given what we currently know about COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, CDC is shortening the recommended time for isolation from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to five days, if asymptomatic, followed by five days of wearing a mask when around others," the CDC said in a statement. People whose symptoms are getting better may also leave their homes after five days so long as their symptoms are improving, the CDC said. People who have a fever should stay home until the fever clears up, the CDC added. CNN Visit our website LA Police Protective League | 1308 West Eighth Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017 Unsubscribe
