As we head into the final days of 2021, I’m reaching out to wish you and your family the very best and to report back on the results of our recent end-of-year survey.
By a strong margin, protecting voting rights was the issue of most concern to those who completed the survey — and I share your alarm. The recent laws being passed by Republican state legislatures around the country make access to the ballot box more difficult, particularly for people of color and younger voters. And they give political operatives in some states the power to overturn election results!
These laws threaten the legitimacy of our electoral process. And as we approach a midterm election that could shape our country for generations, the implications are potentially enormous. We simply cannot afford to fail to act.
As I have been, I will continue to work to push the Senate to end or amend the filibuster in order to protect voting rights when the Senate returns on January 3rd. With Republicans — and Trump — eyeing 2022 as their springboard for the 2024 presidential election, everything is on the line in these upcoming midterm elections.
That’s why I’m reaching back out to ask for your input, friends. Can you take a moment to let me know your views on defending our democracy against the threat presented by the growing authoritarian movement in the Republican Party?
This is a moment that requires maximum engagement by every American concerned about our democracy.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me,
Chris
