Dear John,

Have you ever witnessed 75 organizations gathered together in support of a united purpose? Jamie Meade helped accomplish that this past October—from prison.

He and others from the National Lifer’s Association serving life sentences at Macomb Correctional Facility partnered with The Sentencing Project to bring together lawmakers, prosecutors, judges, faith leaders, community members, and families outside the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing to rally for “second look” policies for incarcerated people serving extreme sentences in prison.

Jamie Meade, who has served almost 29 years in prison, and his mom, Pauline Thompson.

Michigan’s mandatory sentencing laws required Judge Sharon Tevis Finch to sentence Jamie to life without parole. She herself wrote that “fundamental fairness” was not served in his case and that his “sentence was unjust.”

Jamie and thousands of others deserve a second look. You can make a difference in their lives by making a donation that supports our advocacy work fighting to eliminate extreme sentences like life without parole.

Next year, we want to continue to bring people together in Michigan and across the country at rallies, research town halls, and advocacy training sessions. But we need your help to make it happen.

From now until December 31, your gift will be matched by a generous donor, up to $20,000! Get involved, and support our work to end mass incarceration today.

P.S. Jamie had one additional request—to use his story as an example of why criminal legal reform is necessary. Forward this email to someone who should hear about his experience and help us amplify the voices of directly impacted people with a donation today.
